Thursday Oct. 21, 1982 I Kaleidoscope I 8 Appeals - from page one There are also four students on the Appeals Board. The four students are representatives appointed by the Student Government. They are: James “Biff” Guilmartin, Kris Robinson, Landon Seism, and Beth Williams. The votes of two faculty members and two student members must be in concurrence with the student’s position for the grievance to be ruled valid. Step 6: If the grievance is deemed valid, the Board shall forward a written account of its deliberations, including its recommendations for redress, to the student, the faculty member, the department chairman, and to Dr. Lawrence Dorr, vice chancellor for academic affairs. After consultation with Dorr, Chair man Bernhardt will convene a meeting of himself, Dorr, Downes, and the faculty member to discuss the matter and suggest strategies for resolving the grievance. According to Downes, the Ap peals Board has one case to review. pending formal procedure, Bern hardt says, “As soon as the board was appointed the appeal was acted on.” This will be the first case to be reviewed by the newly founded Ap peals Board, which was formed to act on the appeal. The Appeals Board has been in the planning stages since before the beginning of fall semester. Bernhardt stresses that an appeal has to meet the definition of unfair or improper treatment. He says that complaints such as, “I think he did a lousy job,” are not the kind of thing the board will consider. “Specifically, the kind of things we can take up are prejudice, not follow ing procedures, or an instructor threatening a student.” For more information on filing a grievance against a teacher, Bern hardt says, “As it appears in the Student Guide is exactly the pro cedures that will be followed and the types of grievances that can be brought.” McDonald^ - from page one McDonald’s vice-president in Raleigh, who would make the ar rangements. Those arrangements resulted in two years rent free oc cupancy and an offer from Johnson to help in any way she could with store decoration. After the art department moved out, the space was turned into of fices and an indoor play land. “We started out to put pictures of ten kids doing various things on each wall. What was to be 30 kids in six weeks turned out to be 157 kids, assorted animals and one clown, Ronald McDonald, in six weeks,” Johnson said. The mural was painted by Johnson and Saralyn Spradling, a UNCA art graduate who now teaches part-time at the university. Johnson asked for Spradling’s assistance on the project because of her ability and because they “worked well together.” Originally the paintings were done from pictures of the children of the building workers as well as Johnson’s and Spradling’s own children. Soon parents and children were coming in with snapshots. McDonald’s, complete with mural, opened officially in 1980 with a media party. The children and their' parents were invited. Johnson said McDonald’s has been “very cooperative” in granting any of her requests. They also donated $4,000 to the UNCA art department for bronze casting equipment. The past four years McDonald’s has given prize money for the Oc tober Show, an annual, local, highly juried show sponsored by the UNCA art alumni. High Country Crafters and the Asheville Art Museum. “The community has responded really well,” to the revolving gallery and “McDonald’s is very pleased with it,” Johnson said.
