Atkinson was arrested and charged with drug fraud and simple possession of mari juana. On Dec. 2 a scheduled Student Government meeting was held with thirteen senators, Atkinson, and Secretary-Treasurer Beth Williams in attendance. After about 45 minutes of regular business Atkin son called for a closed session to discuss personnel, specifically Stu dent Government President James “Biff” Guilmartin’s request for his (Atkinson’s) resignation and other comments given to the Kaleidoscope- concerning Atkinson. The motion was accepted and two Kaleidoscope reporters in atten dance were not allowed to attend. Secretary Williams was also not allowed to attend since she is a member of the executive branch. The executive branch consists of the President, vice president, secretary- treasurer, and attorney general- elections commissioner. The vice president is the only member of the executive branch allowed to attend a closed session because one of his responsibilities is to conduct all Senate meetings. Therefore no of ficial minutes were taken and it is difficult to determine exactly what happened in the closed session. Atkinson said, “I passed the gavel to Sabra Frye. I did not run the meeting so I did not manipulate this.” As Senior Senator, Frye would replace Atkinson if he could not fulfill his duties for the re mainder of his term. According to Atkinson’s notes from the closed session, formal legislation was passed concerning his job. According to Atkinson, Dorm Senator Brian Joyce, arid Senior Senator Frye this legislation included: A Senate concensus show ing dissatisfaction with the newspaper article and Guilmartin’s comments within. A vote of con fidence was held supporting Atkin son’s job and the fullfillment thereof. Also an executive edict of accountability was passed requiring the Student Government President to be accountable to the Senate con cerning statements regarding senators, expenditures, or any other executive actions. Of the meeting Atkinson told the Kaleidoscope, “I’m responsible for formal legislation passed in the Senate and this was formal legisla tion.” Commenting on his arrest Atkin son said, “I have been legally'advis ed not to make a statement concern ing the drug charges.” According to Detective! Jerry Lambert of the Asheville Police Department at Atkinson’s first court appearance on Dec. 6 “the hearing was waived to Superior Court.” Speaking about his job Atkinson said, “I feel IVe done an excellent job. The Senate has never been run better of tried to work harder with the executive (Guilmartin). The serviee is being offered as the result of a need assessed by Encore Anonymous., Tutoring will be done in groups of no less than two and no more than five. Students will pay one dollar per hour for materials and handling. Tutors will be paid five dollars per hour. The sessions will be held on campus unless otherwise arranged in advance. Anyone with two unex cused absences from a tutoring ses sion will not be allowed to use the service again during the remainder of the semester. A student feeling a need for tutor ing will go to the instructor of the course for approval. A faculty ap proval form must be obtained and these forms will be filled out periodically. Linda Jernigan, coor dinator of the adult student office, said, “We don’t want students re questing tutoring instead of going to class. The service is not to be a substitute for class attendance. We want it to be a supplement for those who need it.” Jernigan said she sees the tutor ing “as an expanding service and an incredibly good use of student fees.” A concern for using student activity fees for things Encore Anonymous felt were relevant prompted them to ask for funds for the tutoring ser vice. They requested these funds in their budget to the campus commis sion. One concern of Encore Anon ymous is that returning students often have given up jobs to come back to school, and are managing on a tight budget. They may have been out of school for a long period of time and need help to reestablish their skills. The costs of an outside tutor might be prohibitive for them. Also Jernigan says, “A student feels more comfortable with someone in the same boat as he or she is.” Students wishing to serve as tutors must have a “B” or better average in the course to be tutored, and must be available to tutor at least two hours a week, day or even ings. The recommendation of the in structor from whom the course was taken or for whom the course will be tutored is required; They will be responsible for keeping accurate records of the students being continued on page 8
