features Korea: Not just the setting for M*A*S*H Thursday, Jan. 27, 1983 / Kaleidoscope I 3 By Leigh Kelley “All people are basically the same,” said Doug Choi, a new Korean student at UNCA. Choi, who is married and has three children, is in his second semester majoring in languages. He says he is impressed with UNCA, especially the teachers. “I like it here. The teachers are excellent; they have more thoroughness here,” Choi said. Choi’s subject for study is nothing new to him. He knows six languages, including English and his native Korean. He studies Ger man this semester and plans to study French next fall. Choi’s move to America was an opportunity to further his education. “To me, America has more of the good quality education. That’s the reason most Koreans come over here,” he said. He says that he values the freedom he has to do what he wants. Choi says he thinks Americans have an incorrect image about Koreans. “Still people think Korea is the land of war. They think, ‘Ah! the war, the poor.’ StiU many people think Korea is what they see on M*A*S*H. This is absolutely not true,” he says. Korea is more in dustrialized now, Choi says. “In the last ten years social problems have improved,” he says, adding that Korea is almost like America now. What are his impressions about America? “The people here are very kind,” Choi said, (but they) “waste too much time and money on pets.” It surprises him that domestic animals are so well taken care of. Family matters are different also. “There is much more respect for the family in Korea than here,” Choi says. The divorce rate in Korea is much lower than in America, he says. Choi said he is enjoying his studies at UNCA. Choi says, “I’m enjoying my studies, not just to get a good job but because I enjoy learning new knowledge.” Chopin Lives Six years ago, a noted American concert pianist met with a young New York theater director to discuss a new concept for a musical and theatrical program. The results of that discussion, the program called Chopin Lives, can be seen Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. in the Lipinsky Auditorium. The pianist, Robert Guralnik, and the director, Harold Guskin, spent almost a year developing this fully scripted theatrical evening which combines the music of Chopin with his life. Guralnik, costumed as Chopin, recreates the character while play ing a recital of his greatest works and reminiscing from the piano bench in the first person. He tells us of Chopin’s childhood in Warsaw, his first piano teacher, his frustra tions in Vienna, his love of Paris, his guilt about leaving his Polish homeland and his affair with George Sand. Chopin Lives is sponsored by the Committee for Cultural and Special Events. Admission is free for UNCA students, $4 for adults, $3 for children/senior citizens/UNCA faculty, staff and alumni.
