Photo by Pam Walker By Anne Snuffer Polls opened yester day for student govern ment elections, and vo ter turnout for the day was in the hundreds. Tonight at approxima tely 9 p.m. Mike Hag- garty, SGA elections commissioner, plans to post the winners in the Student Center. But as of now, the elections are still going strong, as they have been all week. Monday and Tuesday, above the noise of video games, a tele vision, and students in the cafeteria, candi dates for the SGA de livered lunch hour speeches in the Student Center. Incumbent president Ken Cagle spoke of his accomplishments during 1983-84. He said the SGA "has built a solid founda tion" for students at UNCA. He added that during his presidency "a new constitution was adopt ed, and a new judicial code was proposed." He went on to say "I will stand for what you - (the students) believe in." Cagle added that his campaign "is built on (the) experience of three years in student government." Also giving a speech Continued on page 12 Student Center becoming Highsmith University Center in Sunday ceremony Anna Paulette Witt The UNCA Student Center will become the Chancellor William E. Highsmith University Center in a 4 p.m. outdoor ceremony on the center's plaza, said Dr. Alf Canon, director of university rela tions, Tuesday. "We sent 3,000 invi tations to this event honoring Chancellor and Mrs. Highsmigh," Canon said. The written invita tions went to UNCA alumni, faculty, staff. trustees, tormer trus tees, and to UNC Presi dent Wiiliam Friday. "Students are also in vited and will be noti fied by campus flyers this week," Canon said. Taking part in the ceremony are: Dr. James A Stewart, UNCA profes sor emeritus of philos ophy; Dr. Jeff Rackhara, chairman, department of literature and chair man, faculty senate; Gordon Greenwood of Black Mountain, repre sentative to the North Carolina General Assem bly, who was instrumen tal in Ashevdle-Bilt- more College becoming part of the UNC system. Highsmith Cool day coming for pool sharks What's in a name?: The Student Center Photo by Pam Walker By Cathy James Relief is on the way for Student Center pool players, video addicts, diners, and others who suffer from the cen ter's stifling late summer heat. After approximately two years with no air conditioning, students can enjoy the Student Center in comfort by '84 fall semester, said Sam Millar, plant eng ineer. "The building was originally designed for air conditioning, but it had to be left out for lack of funds," said Millar. The Board of Trus tees, Board of Gover nors and the Advisory Budget Commission recently approved an $80,000 appropriation for the air condition ing.
