'art, a word for which i have
no other meaning but ALIVE'
— e.e. Cummings
For Dr. Joyce Dorr, chairman of the Music Department and
originator/coordinator of UNCA's Celebration of the Arts, these
words are at the heart of the array of events that will be taking place
throughout April,
What began five years ago as a two-week festival with 15 events
has blossomed into a month-long showcase of visual, musical, drama
tic, and literary creativity.
The Music Department sponsors the Celebration; raising funds,
publicizing, and scheduling the events (most of which are free).
This year's celebration will reflect the art of the 20th century.
"Everything that happens will emphasize in some way or other contem
porary development in art," says Dr. Dorr, from a Post Wave Music
concert by UNCA professor/composer Wayne Kirby to the Graffiti
Mural Project and Workshop.
"Every member in the art, music, and drama departments is
involved in the Celebration in some way or another," she adds.
Adjunct faculty and local and visiting artists will also participate in the
events.
Dorr believes the Celebration "gives everybody a chance to
pause for a moment and reflect on the role and value of arts in our
society."
