Specialized housing
to begin next fall
Ken Hardy
UNCA’s Office of Housing
snd Residence Life will
experiment with specialized
housing during the 1986 fall
Semester.
; The Housing office is tak
ing steps to provide resi
dence halls which accomodate
students' needs and inte-
i*ests, according to Pete
Williams, housing director.
Beginning in the fall, the
^ighrise will contain two
’’quiet" floors. These 24-hour
^luiet halls will be located
on the north halls of the
sixth and seventh floors.
Stemming from a housing
Survey distributed earlier in
^he semester by the Housing
office, residents showed
enough interest for more than
one 24-hour quiet floor, said
Williams.
Seven north is already a
24~hour quiet floor. Six
north was chosen because
fewer students would be dis
placed. Williams said he
'vanted to "displace as few
Presidents) as possible."
Theta Chi fraternity com
prised most of six North this
Semester. Most of the fra
ternity is moving to the vil-
^^ge in their own designated
dorm, said Williams.
Other fraternities on cam
pus will have their own dor
mitory next fall.
Theta Chi will live in the
first and second floors of
Swain dorm. Pi Lambda Phi
will reside on the first and
second floors of Ay cock dorm.
"The highrise is not con
ducive for fraternities and
specialized housing. There
are no commons areas for
large groups to meet," said
Williams.
He also said the village
dorms contain large storage
areas on the first floors.
These areas are scheduled for
renovations during the sum
mer. They will serve as
meeting rooms and lounges for
village residents.
Some sororities will re
ceive specialized housing in
the highrise.
Seven south wiU accomodate
Delta Beta and third south
will house Alpha Xi Delta.
According to Williams, the
housing situation with Alpha
Xi Delta did not pan out.
The sorority showed "the
least number in way of a
commitment."

Problems with parties
continue on campus
By Julie Ball
Sponsors of an April 10
party held on the soccer
field failed to totally com
ply with stricter alcohol po
licies, a mistake which could
have resulted in liability
problems for the sponsors,
according to Helen Carroll,
associoate director for ath
letics .
The Mud 500 Club (M5C) and
Pi Lambda Phi sponsored the
party, and did not have an
advisor or campus police of
ficer at the party.
Parties on the soccer field
where alcohol will be served
are required to have a campus
police officer or an advisor
to monitor the event, said
Carroll.
She was unsure of how the
policy was enforced in the
past, but Rob Rusnak, former
president the M5C, said their
organization was not required
to have an officer at a party
held last spring.
According to the UNCA Stu
dent Guide, "Organized events
such as pre-planned parties
on the athletic field where
alcohol will be served must
have prior written approval
from the athletic director
and a UNCA alcohol beverage
permit completed."
The guide does not, how
ever, specify the requirement
of a campus police officer.
It also is the responsi
bility of all groups who
serve alcohol at parties to
check IDs, said Carroll.
According to Carroll, she
had never handled an alcohol
beverage permit before the
April 10 party since this is
her first year in the posi
tion.
Tom Atkins, current M5C
president, said their group
