Quick action by the chair man of the physical education program and a student athle tic trainer prevented the fire from spreading to the gym roof, according to campus police officer Larry Layman. ’’The fire was detected at approximately 11:50 Tuesday morning,” said Layman. ’’Cc^ch Bob Daughton and Nathan Rick man are to be commended for their actions • ’’They prevented the fire from spreading to the ex terior of the roof,** Layman said. ^ . Helen Carroll, associate director of athletics, said the small size of the conces sion booth could have caused the fire. *'It looks like it started in the popcorn machine out let," said Carroll. "The socket was melted. The con cession booth is so narrow, switches can be brushed against and accidentally turned on," she said. Layman said, "Total real property damage is estimated at $1500. A couple of popcorn machines and other concession machines were lost. Still, it could have been much worse." Director selected for Atmospheric Science « ^ of th€ John Coutlakis The administration has se lected a man who once taught ftt UNCA in the early 1970s as the new director for the at mospheric science department. Dr. Ray Hoxit will assume the position in July, accord- ^hg to Chancellor David Brown. Hoxit, who taught a ^asic course in meteorology ^hd climatology at UNCA, was ^ unanimous choice by the Selection committee composed various faculty members. Said Brown. Last December, the Blue Banner reported that Dr. Lau-y ^*ence Dorr, vice chancellor academic affairs, had de cided to replace Dr. Edward Brotak as director of the atmospheric science depart ment in order to bring "out side blood" into the program. At the time, many of Bro- tak's students saw *hat deci sion as a mistake, and Bro_^ maintained he had done a good iob. He attributed much of the growth of the program to his abflities as director. Last week, Brotak said he believes the administation chose a qualified P™- "Hoxit is a very well qual- candidate." he said, known Ray for six or years. The incoming director said ' he has heard that it is some- times difficult to move from mainly a problem in large professional work in a field universities where teaching to teaching and communicating is secondary to research with students.
