Carnegie report
doesn’t apply
By Libby Ramsey
Staff Writer
A recent report issued by
the Carnegie Foundation con
cludes that "colleges are
more successful at handing
out degrees than in educating
students," but several UNCA
professors believe that this
university doesn't fall into
that category.
The Carnegie Foundation for
the Advancement of Teaching,
based in Princeton, N.J.,
spent $1 million on a study
of four-year colleges.
The study focused on the
quality of the 2,000 colleges
nationwide that enroll more
than five million students,
as the Associated Press re

As a result of its find

UNCA may soon gain national
distinction with help
from a group of prominent
leaders from across the coun
try.
The Board of Visitors con
sisting of 33 raembeis who
will advise the university,
met for the first time on
campus last Friday.
Faculty and staff members
nominate the members of the
board and the Board of Trust
ees elects them. Eighty per
cent of the potential members
accepted positions on the
board. They are all volun
teers .
Friday's meeting was an
orientational visit where
members of the board became
acquainted with the campus.
In the future, the board
will be available to advise
and consult with the chancel

with regard to the overall
