The UNCA men’s basketball team
lost its season opener to Clemson
University last night 89-58. "It was
a tough opener naturally because
they are so good," Coach Jerry
Green said.
The Bulldogs went scoreless until
Milton Moore scored with 6:15 gone
from the clock. Midway through the
first half, the Bulldogs were down
20-6. At this point, they began to
pick up the offensive and by the
half the score was 44-22. "We never
got into a groove in the first half,"
Green said.
In the second half, the Bulldogs
had a better showing offensively as
they were only outscored 35 to 46.
The deficit was too great, however.
"Struggling with our offense put us
in a hole," Green said.
"Defensively we gave a good ef
fort and our reboimding was good,"
Green continued. The Tigers outre-
bounded the Bulldogs 38-31.
Clemson Coach Cliff Ellis compli
mented the team on their play. "For
the conference they are in they will
do real well," Ellis said. "They suf
fered from early jitters but looked
more polished in the second half."
Milton Moore led the Bulldogs in
scoring with 17 points. William Fun
derburk added 12 points.
Anthony Jenkins and Elden Camp
bell pumped in 14 points each for
the Tigers. Horace Grant, the Tigers
leading scorer, did not start and was
held to 11 points.
"I was dissappointed in the play of
Van (Wilkins)," Green said. "He shot
as bad as he’s ever shot."
However, Green voiced praise foj
several of his players. "Ricky Chat ;
mon gave us as good an effort as hi
could," Green said. He also praisec
Milton Moore and said he had po
tential to develop into an outstand
ing player.
Despite the loss, Green found
some bright spots about the game.
"We learned that Derrick Worrels
and Ricky Chatmon are very good
players, Green said. "Overall we can
look at this and see some of the
mistakes we can’t see in scrimmage-"
UNCA’s Mark Magee named to Big South All-Conference team

UNCA sophomore soccer player
Mark Magee was honored recently
with his selection to the Big South
Conference’s All-Conference team.
He made the team despite a slow
start that saw him go about half the
season without scoring a goal.
"Midway through the season I got
frustrated with not scoring, but on
ce I started to score I got five go
als in two games," he said.
"Not scoring early in the season
was not so bad because Mike
Eichner was scoring for us," he
continued.
Magee started on his scoring str
eak with a three-goal game against
Warren Wilson. "I started playing the
way I know how to play and the
way I know I can," he said. "Earlier
in the season I think I was trying
too hard."
For the week of October 19-25,
Magee was named as the Big South
Conference Player of the Week after
games against Coastal Carolina,
Baptist College and the College of
Charleston.
Magee said he believes this helped
him play well in the latter part of
the season. "After I got Player of
the Week I really started to play
well," he said. "It boosted my
confidence."
Predictably, Magee is looking
forward to next year. "At the end of
the season the team was playing
outstanding and that made it easier
for me to do what I did," he said.
"I’m looking forward to next year. I
got all-conference, which is what I
set out to do, and now I want to do
bigger things," he said.
One of these goals is a win over
Clemson in next year’s opener.
