create controversy

Racism is the issue and the place
of controversy is UNCA.
In the "Corner Comments" section of
last week’s issue, the Blue Banner
asked students if racism is present
on the campus or in Asheville. The
response from one student provoked
the Black Student Association to call
a press conference.
"We, the Black Student Associa
tion, are concerned that this type of
remark could lead to a pattern of
hostility, both verbal and physical,"
said Charles Lee, vice-president of
the BSA, Feb. 20 at the press con
ference.
"The Banner staff should be com
mended, first on addressing the
issue, and secondly on presenting a
wide variety of opinions in what was
printed in the paper," said Lee.
"We would like to see the issue of
racism at UNCA addressed in an
open, non-confrontational and forth
right fashion," he said.
The Student Government Associa
tion also issued a statement.
"It is my responsibility to
denounce any form of discrimination
and/or racism at UNCA," said Ken
Hardy, SGA president.
"The goals of student government
have always been to promote co
operation between all students, re

The printing of the comment did

meeting of the chancellor, faculty,
staff and BSA members.
The closed meeting took place in
Chancellor David Brovra’s office.
"It was a positive meeting," said

The management department at
UNCA is losing another faculty
member. Dr. David Hott is resigning
in June of this year.
"I am leaving because I disagree
with the current organization and
running of this administration,” said
Hott.
Hott is in his third year as asso
ciate professor of management with
UNCA. He will be joining the fa
culty of the University of Massachu
setts at Amherst.
"I want to make it clear that I am
not leaving for more money or pre
stige," said Hott, "By that measure,
I would have never come to UNCA."
Although his new position will
certainly provide a bigger salary at
a more prestigious school,
