ACADEMIC
Attention seniors! The
annual competition for
grants for graduate study
abroad is underway. Some
670 awards to over 100
countries will be available
for 1998-99.
The purpose of these
grants is to increase mu
tual understanding be
tween the peoples of the
United States and other
countries through the ex
change of persons, knowl
edge, and skills.Most of the
grants provide round-trip
transportation, tuition, and
maintenance for one aca
demic year. Applicants
must be U.S. citizens and
generally must hold a
bachelor’s degree or its
ACADEMIC
equivalent before the be
ginning date of the grant
and, in most cases, should
be proficient in the lan
guage of the host country.
Creative and performing
artists are not required to
have a bachelor’s degree,
but they must have four
years of professional study
or equivalent experience.
Selection is based on the
academic and/or profes
sional record of the appli
cant, the validity and feasi
bility of the proposed study
plan, language preparation,
and personal qualifications.
Preference is given to those
applicants between the
ages of 20 and 35 who have
not had prior opportunity
for extended study or resi
dence abroad. For further
information and application
forms, see Dr. Cathy Pons,
CH 210, acting Fulbright
advisor. Deadline for com
pleted applications and in
terviews is October 9.
