Page 2 The Blue Banner February22,2001 fet Perspectives Plastic dishes for students UNCA’s Student Government As sociation has donesomethingwon- derfui this past week. We were able to sell over 100 reusable plastic-ware dishes to use in the cafeteria in place of the Styrofoam take-out boxes that have been used for the past few years. Many students have voiced their opinions on the Styrofoam policy of Marriott Dining Services, and SGA has been listening. For the past year, three students in SGA have been working hard to bring about a change for the students’ and the environments’ sake. These students were sophomore senators, Walter Fyler, Craig Theiman and myself When we originated this idea, we were hoping to only sell around 20 to 40 of the re-usable plastic ware, but we succeeded far beyond that. The dishes are beneficial to all, saving students the hassle of un friendly Styrofoam, saving Marriott the cost of purchasing more Styrofoam and, most importantly, helping to save Mother Nature. The benefits of the plastic-ware Jenny Bowen SGA Columnist are innumerable. Not only is there the option of having a stylish elec tric blue or hot pink color dish, but the top comes with a lovely foil sticker with blue lettering simply stating, “SGA -Making a Differ ence.” The dishes are microwave, djsh- washer and freezer safe. They are so durable they can withstand a per son jumping up and down on them. Oh, and how could 1 forget what a wonderful Frisbee the lid makes! And, best of all, the dish only cost $1. Students could also use their munch money to pay for it. If you microwave your food in Styrofoam, it sometimes melts into plastic goo that molds around your food. Plus, the durability of the boxes just isn’t that great. SGA sold not only these wonder- They are so durable they can with stand a person jumping up and down on them. ful, reusable plastic dishes, but nifty reusable mugs as well. With each mug purchase, Sodexho Marriott made a donation to the National Fish and Wildlife Foun dation. The price of the mugs was $2.50, but if you bought the dish and the mug together it cost only $3! Now if you missed out on this wonderful deal, you can still try and get your own plastic-ware dish and mug at the SGA office number 4iin the Highsmith Center. What are our future plans? Well, the long-term goal is for SGA to get housing to include the plastic-ware with the check-in registration pack ets for all on campus students. We will also continue to sell the dishes and mugs at the beginning of each semester for the commuter students. We are one of the first universities in the country to try this program, and we look forward to its success. But, SGA doesn’t deserve all the credit. In fact, students like you who voice your opinions to SGA and buy the plastic-ware deserve the credit.
