Both teams shot poorly throughout the game as UNCA went 17-for-53 from the field for 32 percent and 3- for-24 from the three-point line, according to the BSC Web page. Meanwhile, Liberty shot 22- of-62 field goals for 35 per cent. The only bright spots in the game for the Bulldogs were senior guard Brett Carey, who had a game-high 18 points and two steals, and sophomore guard Andre Smith, who added 10 points, five rebounds and three steals. “They out-hustled us, and they came out with a lot of intensity,” said Carey, who was named to the Big South All- Conference second team. “We matched their intensity for half the game, but in the second half they came out strong. “They got to all the loose balls at certain times when we needed them, and they hit some big shots when they needed to,” said Carey. Carey started the scoring early for the Bulldogs as they took a 9-4 lead four minutes into the game. The Flames fought back to take the biggest lead of the first half at 25-16 with 4:47 re maining. A three-pointer by Smith with three seconds left closed the gap to 30-26 at halftime. At the start of the second half, the Bulldogs remained close and cut the lead to 36-35 on a layup by senior center Adam Earnhardt at the 10- minute mark. But the Flames pushed their lead back to nine points with less than six minutes to go. The Bulldogs made one final 6-0 run to make the score 49- 46 at the 4:37 mark. However, a three-pointer by Liberty guard Chris Caldwell and a dunk by forward Rob Attaway put the game away for good. The Flames hit free throws the rest of the way. The Bulldogs were hurt by their lack of success from out side the three-point line in the second half, according to the BSC Web site. UNCA hit one of 15 three-point shots in the second half, according to the ANTHONY GRECO/STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER Senior guard Brett Carey shoots over defenders. He ended his career at UNCA with the loss to Liberty University in the Big South Conference Tournament March 1 in Roanoke, Va. "The Liberty game was a very disap pointing loss for us. We played hard, but it just was not our day.” -Eddie Biedenbach, Head Coach The loss not only ended the Bulldogs’ chance to win the tour nament and receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournnament, but it also ends a five-year streak of UNCA appearing in the semi finals of the conference tourna ment, according to the athletics Web site. “The Liberty game was a very disappointing loss tor us,” sa.id Biedenbach. “We played hard, but it just was not our day.” “Liberty changed defenses on us, switching to man-to-man,” said Biedenbach. “They played their bigger guys better than we did and they did a real good job on the boards,” said Biedenbach. Liberty also did well denying the three-point shot to the Bulldogs in the second half, according to Biedenbach. “They did a great job on defense,” said Biedenbach. Leading the attack for the Flames, Caldwell had 16 points and three rebounds. Forward Beau Wallace also helped Li berty beat the Bulldogs by scor ing 16 points while grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out five as sists. Forward Nathan Day was an other key conrributorwith nine points and nine rebounds. Also, Caldwell and Day re ceived BSC second team All- Conference honors according to the athletics Web site. Despite losing their last three games, the ‘Dogs finished the season with a winning record at 15-13. Biedenbach said he expects the team to have an even better season next year. “I do not know if we can be better, but I think we can win more games next year than we won this year,” said Biedenbach. “With the experience of the guys we have coming back, we may not shoot ourselves in the foot like we did this year on about four or five occasions,” said Biedenbach.
