The Barker Campus Information and Activities Campus Construction The November 2000 voter-approved bond program appropriated $49.9 million towards upgrading facilities at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. This is the single largest capital pro gram project in UNCA’s history and will create the infrastructure necessary to continue to provide a premier education for the campus community. Bond Project Highlights • Highsmith Student Center Renovation: Renovation of the Highsmith Center will upgrade UNCA’s university center to meet the expanded needs of the cur rent and future student body. This project will renovate the exist ing Highsmith Center, built in the 1980s and add an additional 46,229 square feet to provide expanded student services and activi ties. The architectural firm of Lee Nichols of Charlotte, North Carolina is the designer. It is scheduled to open Fall 2004. • New Science Building This project will construct a state-of-the-art science building for UNCA’s Biology and Chemistry departments, providing the facilities for UNC Asheville to continue its commitment to a superior education in these important disciplines. O'Brien Atkins, Inc., Raleigh, North Carolina is the designer. Other Capital Project Highlights • New Residence Hall This project is the first of new residence halls to replace the existing Governors Village built in the 1960s. This phase will provide 180 beds, replacing the approximately 80 beds lost with the demolition of Swain, Aycock and Craig Halls. Walls, Robbs, Callahan & Pierce, Winston-Salem NC is the designer. Student Organizations There are more than 50 recognized campus organizations at UNC Asheville. These groups sponsor many events for the entire campus, as well as those planned for their own members. In most cases, membership is open to everyone. If the recognized organizations fail to meet your needs, we encourage you to start one that does.
