In their first home game of the season, the team dis played a dominant performance over mountain-rival Western Carolina in a packed Justice Cen ter on Sept. 2. Led by Kelsey Benorden, who had to kills, 10 digs and six service aces, Asheville swept Western Caro lina 3-0. The Bulldogs won match 25-13, 25-19 and 25-17. he strong performance brought the eated Justice Center crowd to its feet throughout the night. The UNC Asheville student body can expect greatness from our team this season. We will have our ups and owns, like any other team, but one mg is for sure, we are an experi enced team led by five seniors. There- nre we have a solid base of great lead ers who are ready to guide this team to T^e NCAA tournament,” said Assistant Coach Talia Ogle. “You can always f^Pect an exciting match, with great mdividual performances that lead to extraordinary team accomplishments.” Over the weekend the team contin ued their winning streak to five straight ^ins in the USC Upstate Volleyball lassie, which included impressive defeats over N.C. State, the Citadel and USC Upstate. UNCA is now 6-2 and first place overall in the Big South standings. The Eddie Biedenbach Celebrity Tournament Scholarship Fund- ^•ser takes place on Sept. 29 at The ' 'iffs at Walnut Cove. All of the nro- ceeds from the tournament go toward UNC Asheville’s athletic scholarship fund. Biedenbach has many ties to the professional and collegiate world of basketball, mostly due to his extensive career as a player and coach. Over the years you build relation ships from different all-star games and different things that come up,” he said. Florida’s Billy Donovan and Michigan State’s Tom Izzo are also tentatively scheduled to make an appearance. “We expect a full house,” Bieden bach said. “We’ll have 36 to 40 celeb rities. We have a field of 180 golfers and are really close to filling up.” Basketball analysts Jay Bilas, Billy Packer and Jay Williams continue the list of big names, along with former Major League pitcher Darren Holmes.
