But education is just as important, par ticularly for our future leaders.” The goal for the tournament is to generate anywhere from $100,000 to $150,000. Ken Hogue, director for de velopment and alumni affairs, helped with the preparation for the tournament including booking the golf course and bringing in golf coaches. “We use every dollar that we raise through memberships of the Bulldog Athletic Association and special events like this,” he said. “We want to be able to support our athletes.” The tournament greatly contributes to this goal to support the athletes. The NCAA allows UNCA 118.7 scholar ships, if fully funded, to accommodate around 170 athletes. UNCA currently offers 85 to 90 athletic scholarships. Senior baseball player and man agement student Matt Dalby relies on athletic scholarship money to attend UNCA. “A lot of us wouldn’t be able to go to Asheville without that scholarship money, especially being out-of-state students,” he said. “The athletic de partment works hard to make sure we can attend UNCA.” Dalby, who is entering his fourth year, said he has never seen a fundrais ing event like this one. The tournament features 36 five- man teams that include four partici pants and one celebrity. An 11 a.m. shotgun start gets the tournament un derway, followed by the awards din ner at the Hilton Hotel on Long Shoals Road. Golfers pay $500 per person and awards are given to the team that raises the most money for the athletics department. “There are a lot of big-name ce lebrities at this tournament, and it’s encouraging to know that we get such an impressive turnout,” Dalby said. “I haven’t heard of anything like this since I’ve been here.” There are an estimated 12 spots remaining for anyone who would like to participate. Win streak CONTINUED FROM PaGE 15 point in UNCA’s victory over WCU. “We really served the ball well to night and did that from the start,” Tor- bett said. “I thought we played with a great deal of intensity, and our crowd was just tremendous this evening. This is a big win for our program. Hopeful ly, we’ll keep building on tonight and keep getting better.” Lauren Picker recorded 14 kills and Kelsey Benorden posted her fourth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 19 digs to lead UNCA to the 20-25, 25-22, 25-14, 25-18 victory over N.C. State Friday afternoon. The victory over N.C. State marked the Bulldogs third straight win of the season and the second straight over the Wolfpack (4-2). Last season, the Bulldogs defeat ed N.C. State 3-2 in Raleigh. UNCA came into the game as underdogs to N.C. State, who had only one loss in their season thus far. “It was an amazing game, our team just played together as a team. We had a great performance as a team,” Mi- otto said. “We didn’t give them time to even realize what was happening on the court.” In the final match of the tourna ment, UNCA defeated USC Upstate (3-4) 25-11, 25-15, 25-9. The overall team effort and chem istry was evident in their play against WCU. “I thought we played our most com plete matches today,” she said. “We hit a high percentage in both matches, we blocked well, we served tough and we played good defense.” Torbett praised multiple players for the Bulldogs’ home win. “I am very proud of the way we played this weekend. Lauren (Pick er) was terrific in the middle and she opened up the outside for Kelsey (Benorden),” Torbett said. “Raquel (Miotto) did a great job of distributing the ball. I thought we played at a high level all weekend.” The Bulldogs will be off until Fri-. day, when they face Savannah State and East Carolina at the Winston-Sa lem State Tournament. The Savannah State match is set to begin at 1 p.m. “We hope to win as many games as we can, if possible, all of them. I think the support of the crowd is helping us a lot,” Miotto said. “I would like to thank everyone that came to the last game and ask everyone to come to as many games as they can. We want the volleyball program to keep growing, ; and we need the student body to enjoy it so it can happen.” Lauren Ficker and Raquel Miotto were chosen as Big South Choice Ho tels Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively.
