Overall, UNCA had 88 student athletes earn 3.0 Gf A dr above for the fall semester. Bulldog tennis prepares for season start Mattie Weingarten mfweinga@unca.edu - Staff Writer The men’s and women’s ten nis programs are poised to be gin their spring season positive ly, with one huge advantage on their side: experience. “The factor that will make this season so much better than last season is the fact that eveiy player that played last year is back to play this year,” men s team captain Nathan White said. “We all have more expe rience and know exactly what we are trying to do out on the court.” Head Coach Lise Gregory said she agrees this season will be more successful than the pre vious. “The boys have worked quite a bit on the mental aspects of the game. I think we’re a lot men tally tougher as a whole than we were last year. As far as the girls go, we’ve been working on our technical performance the most,” she said. Although the players have past seasons for experience, there are not a lot of them, and so, ac cording to Gregory, the biggest Lise Gregory obstacle the team as a whole could face this season is potential injuries. “We’re low in numbers this sea son, so we’ll be in sort of dire straits if we have any illnesses,” Gregory said. “It’s partly my duty as coach to make sure they aren’t burning themselves out. On the side of the athletes, it’s partly their job as well, because the minute you get run down, that’s when you get sick. That’s when you get injured.” According to Gregory, the Bulldogs have some new addi tions that will bolster the team’s roster. French freshman Zoe Hamel is one of these new play ers. “Zoe is very quiet, very fo cused, very reserved,” Gregory said. “She’s quite a hard work er, and a great addition to the team.” Devon Cavanaugh, a junior player on the women’s team, agrees. “She has a great serve/volley combination, and we expect big things from her,” she said. The men’s tennis program also has a couple of new players that, although ineligible for the 2011 spring season, will be use ful in the future. “John Schubel is a feisty red- shirt freshman from NC State. Alex Appelt is a beastly junior returning from a semester sab batical at Roanoke College,” White said. “Unfortunately, both of these players ai'e in eligible to play because of their transfer status.” According to Gregory, the pair is still imperative to the success of the team regardless of their eligibility status. “Both Alex and John can con tribute in other ways until they become eligible,” Gregory said. “They push their teammates in matches, practice and condi tioning. They are still very valu able members of the team.” The Big South Conference preseason polls picked both Bulldogs tennis teams to finish seventh in the 2011 conference season. Although falling in the bottom half of the league. White said the team is unfazed. “I think that the Big South committee picking us seventh preseason is to be expected. All they have to go by is stats. Does this decision have any signifi cance to any human being? Not at all,” he said. According to Cavanaugh, the women’s team is equally un fazed and is ready for a chal lenge. “We don’t care about the preseason polls. We’ve proved them wrong in the past and we’re more than ready to do that again this year,” she said. Despite the pressures of the upcoming season, Gregory said she is confident in the team’s ability to succeed. “My expectations are for the teams to do the things we’ve worked on and focus more on the progress than the results, because when you focus on the work the results take care of themselves,” she said. The women will play on Sat urday at Davidson University and the men will play Augusta State University on Feb. 4.
