The APA tries to appeal to adults as well as children through their performances, according to APA officials. Puppetry Alliance provides rare creative outlet Anne Louise Bouchard olboucha@unca.edu - Asst. A&F Editor Asheville provides many grounds for the art of puppetry to thrive, according to Lisa Sturz, co-founder of the Asheville Pup petry Alliance. “For one, there are just a lot of artistic people here. Not Just in puppetry,” she said. “We just attract that artsy type.” Sturz said another reason Asheville nur tures puppetry is its proximity to the Center for Puppetry Arts. “The largest puppetry center in the coun try is in Atlanta, so we can take advantage of that,” she said. The Center for Puppetry Arts brings in national performers who would otherwise be out of reach for smaller venues like It takes so much talent, from what I have seen, to not only create the puppets, but also control them." Elizabeth Adams performing arts student Asheville, Sturz said. Annelise DeJong, a senior at UNC Asheville, grew up outside of Atlanta and said she frequently took trips to the Center for Puppetry Arts. “My mom took us to see all sorts of pup pet shows,” the 21-year-old said. “Then we would get to play with the puppets after wards.” The APA began as a group of people who came together to bring quality puppets to North Carolina, said Sturz. “A lot of people started moving here, and we thought, ‘This is crazy. We should do something,’” Sturz said. “We have so much here, so let’s share it.” Much of the art of puppetry gears towards a younger audience.
