Cross country teams race at ECU invitational KATHRYN GAMBILL Sports Staff Writer agambill@unca.edu The UNC Asheville cross coun try team raced at the East Carolina University Pirates Cross Country Invitational Oct. 13, placing sixth for the women’s 6k run and fourth for the men’s 8k run. Head Coach Jesse Norman said while the women’s team did not do as well as the men, the meet overall went well with some outstanding individual performances. “The men’s team has some good depth right now that will allow us to have some success come confer ence championship time,” Norman said. The men’s team ran an average time of 26:01, placing behind Duke, ECU and Norfolk State. “On the women’s side, our stron gest performances came from Phoebe Schneider and Kelley Cole man,” Norman said. “Both of them had some great breakthroughs that moved them onto our all-time list for the 6k distance. Those perfor mances have moved both of them to be contenders for All-Conference honors at our championships next week, with a similar effort and per formance.” The women’s team ran an aver age time of 24:20 for their 6k race. Schneider, a senior management and psychology student, said her time of 22:31 beat her previous 6k record by nearly a minute. Schneider placed 13 out of 68 runners in her race. “I felt very prepared for this race and was happy to achieve this time my senior year,” Schneider said. She said this was a new meet for the team and they had never raced the course. The beginning of the race went smoothly for the women’s team, but Schneider said there are aspects to improve on. “We do, however, need to work on staying together longer and pushing through the difficult parts of the race by relying on one anoth er, remaining confident and work ing together,” she said. Hunter Newman, a sophomore student on the men’s cross country team, said even though he injured his foot during the race, the men’s team had a good performance at the meet. “We ran as a pack very well and our team bonding and chemistry is definitely our strong suit,” Newman said. The runner said he is more confi dent than he has ever been. “We are ready to fight and ready to redeem ourselves from a terrible conference showing last year on our home course,” Newman said.
