The UNC Asheville cross coun
try team raced at the East Carolina
University Pirates Cross Country
Invitational Oct. 13, placing sixth
for the women’s 6k run and fourth
for the men’s 8k run.
Head Coach Jesse Norman said
while the women’s team did not do
as well as the men, the meet overall
went well with some outstanding
individual performances.
“The men’s team has some good
depth right now that will allow us
to have some success come confer
ence championship time,” Norman
said.
The men’s team ran an average
time of 26:01, placing behind Duke,
ECU and Norfolk State.
“On the women’s side, our stron
gest performances came from
Phoebe Schneider and Kelley Cole
man,” Norman said. “Both of them
had some great breakthroughs that
moved them onto our all-time list
for the 6k distance. Those perfor
mances have moved both of them
to be contenders for All-Conference
honors at our championships next
week, with a similar effort and per
formance.”
The women’s team ran an aver
age time of 24:20 for their 6k race.
Schneider, a senior management
and psychology student, said her
time of 22:31 beat her previous 6k
record by nearly a minute.
Schneider placed 13 out of 68
runners in her race.
“I felt very prepared for this race
and was happy to achieve this time
my senior year,” Schneider said.
She said this was a new meet for
the team and they had never raced
the course. The women’s team is

The beginning of the race went
smoothly for the women’s team, but
Schneider said there are aspects to
improve on.
“We do, however, need to work
on staying together longer and
pushing through the difficult parts
of the race by relying on one anoth
er, remaining confident and work
ing together,” she said.
Hunter Newman, a sophomore
student on the men’s cross country
team, said even though he injured
his foot during the race, the men’s
team had a good performance at the
meet.
“We ran as a pack very well and
our team bonding and chemistry is
definitely our strong suit,” Newman
said.
The runner said he is more confi
dent than he has ever been.
“We are ready to fight and ready
to redeem ourselves from a terrible
conference showing last year on
our home course,” Newman said.
