Here's Your Paper, UNCA
The first issue of any new publica
tion must make its creators feel a lit
tle like Ben Franklin getting the first
pages ready for "Poor Richard's
Almanack,” proud and happy but
anxious to know it will be well receiv
ed.
This is the first printing for a new
publication at UNC-A. It will come off
the press on a regular schedule every
two weeks and will contain all the
news we can squeeze into it about the
people and events at this university.
Chancellor's Corner
This issue of our new bi-weekly
university publication gives me the
opportunity to say "Welcome" to
UNC-A's new students and to the
larger number returning for another
school term. I wish all of you a happy
and productive year and pledge you
the full cooperation of the administra
tion, faculty and staff in achieving the
greatest possible benefit from your
education.
I am delighted to know that the
beginning of our 1979 fall semester
brings with it a new publication for
the students, faculty, alumni and
friends of UNC-A.
For some time I have felt strongly
that we need such a publication. 1
listed it as an important undertaking
for our reorganized Public Informa
tion Office when it was joined to the
new Office of University Relations
last January.
There are many needs this newslet
ter can serve.
First, our former "Weekly Bulletin"
was not big enough to hold much
more than a simple list of scheduled
events. We had to have more space if
we were going to print an adequate
newsletter. This paper will provide it.
Second, we wanted a regular

We want to make it informal and a
pleasure to read. Above all, we want
it to be a means for sharing informa
tion between students, faculty and
members of the administration. As
Chancellor Highsmith observes on
this page, such a publication has been
needed at UNC-A for a long time.
Now, what shall it be called?
Think about the trouble parents
have trying to pick a name for a baby
and you will understand our difficulty
deciding what to call this one. For the
present, as you can see, we kind of
like calling it "The Paper." After all,
long before Ben Franklin, people
were saying they had read something
in "the paper." But we've never yet
seen that name on a masthead. So
there it is, at the top of this page.
Of course, it isn't chiseled in
granite. If enough readers don't like
"the paper" we'll be willing to oblige
by changing it to something else.
Some other names that occurred to
us were "The Barker" (a reference to
the UNC-A bulldog), "The UNC-
Accent." "The Notebook," "The
Blackboard" and "The Folio."
If you like any of these better than
"The Paper", or don't like any of
them, including "The Paper," please
let us know. If you have some better
ideas, get them to the Public Informa
tion Office right away. Your sugges
tion may be just the one we've been
groping for.
A word about our requirements for
future issues. Since "the paper," or
whatever we call it, will be printed bi
weekly we will need to have informa
tion about future events as much as
two and a half weeks ahead of time.
This will obviously be a problem in
many cases, but on a two-week
schedule it is unavoidable. Please
keep this in mind in sending us your
schedules and announcements.

From The Student Editor
As the sultry summer melts into
fall, UNC-A students will once again
gather beneath the shadow of Mt.
Pisgah for the start of another school
year. Your Student Government
representatives take this opportunity
to welcome one and all to the UNC-A /
campus. We look forward to working
with and for our fellow students in the
months ahead.
Throughout the summer, we
sweated and fretted over many pro
jects and services that are now near
ing fruition. We believe our efforts
will be of genuine interest to
students, and other members of the
university community. The projects
and activities planned for this fall are
chronologically outlined in the
paragraphs to follow.
But first, a question: Does anyone
out there like to dance? If so, we sug
gest you dust off your best dancing
shoes, for you will certainly need
them the last week in August. On the
25th, Student Government is sponsor
ing a back-to-school disco dance;
then, on the 31st, the hardrocking
band "Threshold" will play at our an
nual orientation dance.
All game enthusiasts should take
note of the opening of a new
gameroom, located in the old I.O.C.
meeting room on the main floor of
Lipinsky Student Center. Scheduled to
open on Monday, August 27, the
following games will be featured:
pinball (3), foosball (3), and an air
hockey game. Throw in a couple of
