But it is not my purpose to attempt to convert shirkers into workers. In stead, in the remaining paragraphs I aim to inform my work and guilt laden fellow students of upcoming Student Government activities that should contribute to an easing of in ner tensions. While many feel it is the responsibility of faculty and ad ministration to burden your minds with ideas and hassles respectively, those of us involved in Student Government perceive it to be our solemn duty to unburden your tor tured minds and souls via social ac tivities. We suggest you check out two Stu dent Government sponsored addi tions to Lipinsky Student Center—the Gameroom (located on the main floor in the old I.O.C. meeting room), and the Rathskeller (adjacent to the Snack Bar)—both rooms designed to simul taneously unburden students of their worries and of their wallets (purses). No, we have not resorted to hiring professional pickpockets, yet. . .al though the thought did cross our minds! The naked truth is that none of our efforts at resuscitating on- campus social life can hope to suc ceed without the steady support of fellow students. So we implore you: help us help you. Also, we recommend students avail themselves of the free movies shown twice every Sunday evening, begin ning at 6:30 in the Lipinsky auditorium. On September 16, Slaughterhouse-5 will be the featured film. Based on the novel by Vonnegut, and directed by George Roy-Hill, director of The Sting, it was the first American movie to win the Cannes Film Festival. The following Sunday, September 23, Movie Movie — a humorous reprise of the old Hollywood double feature films of the 1930's, starring George C. Scott and Red Buttons—will be shown. On September 15, down on the soc cer field, an all-day outdoor fun-and- suds fest sponsored by Schlitz is scheduled. All sorts of events and ac tivities are planned. Ask a Student Government representative for addi tional information. Free Gift Packs The Office of Student Activities has free gift packs for women. Sorry that there are no more Mens Free Gift Packs. Come by Monday through Fri day 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. Lecturer Linda Nelms of the Management Department wants her French owl back. "La Chouette" as it prefers to be called, is the decoration on Nelms' missing coffee mug. Both mug and owl unaccountably took flight sometime during registra tion day, Friday, Aug, 24, from their resting place in the freshman registration area. She has a sen timental attachment to the mug, and therefore to the owl. When last seen, the mug held a leftover libation of indifferent coffee. She says if owl and mug are returned to the Management Department in Zageir Social Sciences Building, the "finder" may keep the coffee, no questions asked. A pair of men's sunglasses also • vanished about the same time and place. The owl was not wearing them. They may likewise be returned to the Social Sciences Building if their whereabouts are known. IMPORTANT NOTICE Friday, September 14, is the last day to drop a Term I course with a "W" grade. "F" grades will be given in courses dropped after this date. Physics Chairman Dr. Michael J. Ruiz, assistant pro fessor of physics, has been appointed acting chairman of the Physics Department during the absence of Dr. Robert S. Cole. His appointment was announced by Dr. Laurence A. Dorr, vice chairman for academic affairs. Associate Professor Cole is on leave of absence to teach at Evergreen State University in Washington state. Dr. Ruiz has been a member of the UNC-A faculty since August, 1979. He came to the university from College Park, Maryland.
