ALUMNI NOTES
Vacations are overlLeaves are fall-
inglWinter is just around the corner!
This is the time to start on programs
and activities of the Alumni Associa
tion for the coming year, and winding
up those for the rest of this year.
The Board of Directors will hold
their monthly meeting on November 6
at 6:30 p.m. in the conference room of
the Administration Building.
Our Annual Alumni Meeting will be
held in December. The date will be
decided at the board meeting and
notices mailed. We hope to have a
large attendance of alumni present at
this important meeting.
Plans are being formulated for the
U.S. Air Force Band to come here in
the spring. More information will be
forthcoming on this when we get con
firmation on this scheduled event.
Homecoming will be February 16,
1980, at The Inn On The Plaza. Plans
are being made now. The Student
Government and Alumni Associations
will be working together on this.
Reminder: Fruit cakes are here for
our Annual Fund Raising Sale. Get
yours to sell. Now is the time to sell
these before the holiday season. They
are in the Alumni Office. Call or come
by from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to pick
up your carton.
Also for sale by the Alumni Associa
tion as another fund raiser are the
license tags “I Like Calling North
Carolina Home." These are attractive
tags in the school colors of blue and
white. They sell for $2 each. Support
your Alumni Association and at the
same time promote your state by pur
chasing one of these tags.
Volunteers are needed to help in the
Office once or twice a week for one or
two hours. Call Chris Royall in the
Alumni Office, 258-0200, Ext. 306, to
arrange time. This is very important.

IT'S BASKETBALL SEASON AGAIN
FOR "MIDDLE" INCOMES
(Information from Financial Aid Office)
Early in November of 1978 President
Carter signed the Middle Income Stu
dent Assistance Act. This is the most
sweeping piece of legislation concern
ing student aid since the Gl Bill of
1946. With the signing of this Act, sud
denly millions more students are
eligible for Federal help.
Until August 1, 1979, generally only
students from families with total in
comes under $16,000 were eligible for
Basic Educational Opportunity Grants
(BEOG). After that date, almost all
students coming from families with in
comes under $25,000 will be eligible
for Basic Grants. In fact, some students
whose families earn up tr $30,000 per
year will be eligible. The formula for
eligibility has been drastically changed
to benefit an enormous number of
students from middle income families.
The other change in financial aid
programs because of this Act is that
now all students, regardless of family
income, can borrow through the
guaranteed Student Loan Program and
have the interest paid on the loan until
the repayment period begins.
If you have heard from family or
friends that you will not qualify for
financial aid because of your parents'
income, don't believe it. The rules
have changed. Apply for financial aid.
Another thing, because you are turned
down for one specific program does
not mean that you don't qualify for
financial aid.
Different programs have different re
quirements. Examine all the programs.
Don't give up easily.
(Note: Eligibility is based on your in
dividual family's financial strength and
will vary from family to family.)
For sports fans, November is the
month when basketball becomes the
center of attention for the frantically
fanatical future. At least for the follow
ing three months.
At UNC-A, it will be Ladies first. Bob
bie Quinn's Lady Bulldogs have first
bite, taking the floor against Catawba
College at Salisbury on Saturday, Nov.
17.
Jerry Green's Bulldogs play Carson
Newman College at the Asheville Civic
Center on Tuesday, Nov. 20.
The men play a 27-game regular
schedule that ends Feb. 26. It includes
12 home games. The NAIA playoffs are
scheduled Feb. 29.
The women play a 23-game regular
schedule ending Feb. 18, with the
North Carolina AIWA tournament
scheduled Feb. 20-23 at North
Carolina A&T University. The
women's schedule includes 13 home
games.
