WISE AND UNC-A
Radio Station WISE, better known to
AM listeners as “Big WISE," is entitled
to a lot of appreciation from the peo
ple at UNC-A.
For the past nine years, week in and
week out, WISE has been giving a half
hour of its valuable time to the Univer
sity for broadcasting its half-hour
"UNC-A Report," which now airs at
10 p.m. Sunday.
Special thanks are due to news

THE LADY BULLDOGS
By Lisa Berman, Women's Basketball
In what started off as a disappointing
season for the Lady Bulldogs, by the
end of November, there are bright
spots that keep Coach Bobbie Quinn
saying, "I'm not depressed. We have a
lot a team unity and I know the girls
will come around. We will have a
good season."
Friday, November 16, was the
team's home opener. After the men's

The UNC-A men's basketball team
has started this year's season off in fine
fashion. November 20 was the open
ing date for the team's first victim, Car
son Newman. They came into the
Civic Center looking-for their first win.
When they left Asheville, they pro
bably wished they had never come.
The "Bulldogs" won 63-58.
The score didn't really indicate
UNC-A's dominance, as a seven
minute dry spell in scoring by UNC-A
provided Carson Newman with a
chance to get back into the game.
Senior George Gilbert led UNC-A in
scoring with 18 points. He was follow
ed by Phil Oakes and Ross Farrington,
both with 13.
The following Saturday, UNC-A
traveled to Belmont to face a tough
Belmont-Abbey team. Belmont-Abbey
was picked to finish third in District 26.
UNC-A fought hard right to the end
but came up on the short end of a
77-74 score. Coach Green said after
the game "I thought we played as hard
as I had hoped we would."
Senior Charleston Miles led UNC-A
with 19 points. Eddie Latta and George
Gilbert finished with 18 and 16 points
respectively.
Tuesday night, Nov. 27, UNC-A
again played in the Civic Center.
Wingate College was the only thing in
the way of UNC-A getting back on its
winning ways. It proved to be a minor
step as UNC-A won very handily,
83-73. UNC-A led most of the way,
leading at one time by 19.
Coach Green was disappointed at
losing the big lead. "In our rating
system we need to beat people as bad
as we can. The rating system is the on
ly way to get into the playoffs," he
said.
Leading scorers for UNC-A were Phil
Oakes (20), George Gilbert (18), Ross
Farrington (15), and Eddie Latta (14).
This year's first home game in Justice
Gym, now that problems with the roof
supports have been corrected, gave
the Bulldogs another big mark on the
winning side of the record sheet.
