A message
from Dr. William E. Highsmith;
Chancellor
This copy of The Paper observes the
end of the 1979-80 academic year and
the beginning of the Commencement
season, when we recognize and honor
the students who have completed all
requirements for the baccalaureate
degree. It is an important event in the
lives of these students, and it is an im
portant event in the life of UNC-A. We
extend our congratulations and best
wishes to all members of the Class of
1980..
The year which we are now com
pleting has seen some important
developments. In December we open
ed the Owen Building, making ex
cellent facilities available for the
Department of Art and Management.
In March we broke ground for the
Headquarters Laboratory of the U.S.
Forest Service. We are now having
conversations with that agency con
cerning research and internships.
On April 22, bids were opened for
the new dormitory-student center
complex. The bids came in a bit high,
but negotiations are going forward so
that construction contracts can be
signed and the work begun. The pro
ject should be available for use in the
Fall of 1982. In addition to construc
tion of buildings, the Long Range Plan
for 1980-1985 was approved by the
Board of Trustees and is now being
considered by the Board of Governors
of the state-wide university. The
recommendations and requests,
already reported in The Paper, point to
extremely significant developments at
UNC-A in the future.
All in all, it has been a good year. I
extend my appreciation to all who
have worked so hard all year long and
I hope the summer of 1980 will be a
pleasant experience for all of us.
