7 Nuclear War Continued From Page Three Union's "intervention" into Afghanistan, the United States Con gress has suspended the SALT II treaty debate. This might make one wonder if the Soviet Union is serious about nuclear arrps limitations. A second grade child in the Soviet Union is acquainted with civil preparedness (in the event of a nuclear attack), and is required to partake in systematic training up to age 60. A fac tory worker in the Soviet Union spends two-to-four hours a month drilling in the factory's underground shelter, which is complete with food, water, bedding, and is large enough to accommodate the largest work shift. CIA sources claim that at least 75 shelters are peppered in and around Moscow and other major cities. These shelters, described as "huge spheres" of metal, are 600 feet underground, and are equipped with communications networks. It is sup posed that these shelters are large enough to accommodate the higher ranking officials of the Soviet govern ment. Huge grain storage tanks are buried throughout the Soviet Union, some filled with grain acquired from the United States. These grain shelters are located be tween industrial centers. And Russian industry is situated so that only a direct hit could destroy all of the buildings of a single factory. Geographically, in dustry takes up about 2.7 per cent of the Soviet Union's land mass-nine -Turn To Page Eight- The 13th annual Faculty-Staff Golf Tournament is set for Monday, May 19, at Grove Park Country Club. All students get a distorted picture of the Learning Resources Center at UNC-A when they get their ID made or validated. Some come back to get something "SAVINED". This is not at all what a learning resources center normally does. At some schools, the LRC is the entire library, with a media center built in, housing books, microfilm, journals, records, tapes, films, filmstrips, etc. At UNC-A, the LRC is separate from the Library, attending to the non-book media, primarily tapes, slides, films, filmstrips, transparencies, various other photo services, graphic arts, video-taping, etc. What should it mean to you...the student (or faculty)? With everything going up-our services are FREE to both faculty and students. You may il lustrate your class project with slides, transparencies, a videotape, a free film, or a combination of the above. Some students have actually ordered films and videotapes for a class and the instructor was over whelmed. Some have taken equip ment out and filmed or videotaped history in the making; photographed and made slide/tape programs. Creative solutions to mundane mat ters...this could sum up what the Learning Resources Center at UNC-A attempts to do. Give us a try. We are open from 8-4:30 daily, Monday- Friday, located in the Zageir Social Sciences Building, 1st floor. East. Bob Hayner LRC Director follows: From Kimberly take Edgewood Road back towards cam pus; turn right on Merrimon Ave. (at the light by the Gulf station). Go 300 yards and turn left on Fenner by the Sunset Court Motel. The Sulocks' house is about 200 yards off Merrimon, number 57, all white. The "Calloway System" of han dicapping will be used again. There will be awards of "The President's Cup," "Low Gross" and "Hacker's Lament." Call Bob Daughton at the gym, ex tension 222, to make reservations.
