I Brevard C
Coltrane Junior
College Chairman
After consultation with other junior
college executives, President Col
trane called and arranged a program
for the first North Carolina Junior
College Conference, which was held
at Hotel Charlotte, April 4, with a
morning and evening session.
Mr. Coltrane’s efforts were very
favorably accepted by the conference,
and he was unanimously appointed
chairman of the group in its first
year’s work.
Approximately twenty colleges were
represented, and about fifty members
were present. The main issues of
this conference were getting together,
organizing, and discussing the educa
tional standards in junior colleges.
Dr. Walter Fells, of Stanford Univer
sity, was the principal speaker of the
conference.
Mr. Trowbridge, Miss Shore, Miss
Smith, and Mr. Colvard attended with
Mr. Coltrane.
Dr. Highsmith Visits
Brevard College
Wednesday, April 8, Dr. Henry
Highsmith, director of instructional
service, and Dr. James E. Hillman,
director of the division of curriculum
construction, were visitors on our cam
pus for a few hours. Both of these
men are from Raleigh, North Carolina,
and are on their annual tour of the
colleges and universities of North
Carolina. They collected data in order
to arrive at our rating for the year.
A similar visit was made last year.
These two visits are steps towards
oflftcial recognition by the Southern
Association of Colleges and Universi
ties.
Dr. Highsmith is chiefly interested
in vocational training and is a staunch
advocator of courses which will pre
pare young men and young women for
practical service.
While here Dr. Highsmith agreed to

Stunt Night
Observed
Brevard College observed April
Fool’s Day in a big way by having
stunt night Wednesday, April 1, in
the college auditorium. There were
ten different organizations participat
ing in this program, which was en
joyed by a large audience. Taylor
Hall was awarded the tin cup for
having the best stunt for the night.
The program consisted of a variety
of stunts by the following organiza
tions: the faculty, Taylor Hall, Ross
Hall, West Hall, Town Hall, Virginia
Lobge, Delphians and Mnemosyneans,
Clios, Euterpians, Ministerial Band,
Choir and Glee Club. Taylor Hall’s
stunt consisted of the portrayal of
various romances in and around the
campus this year, and all parts were
played by the boys. Some of them
were dressed as girls. The faculty
also presented a very entertaining
stunt when they showed “the stu
dents as they really are on Saturday
or Sunday night in the Biddie Coop.”
All of the stunts showed that there
had been much thought and hard
work expended on them before they
were presented.
The judges for the occasion were
Mrs. DeLong, Mr. Jones, and Mr.
Stroud. Mr. Jones added much to
the program by making a very elabo
rate speech when he presented the
prize. He made every one think he
going to give a silver loving cup be
fore awarding the winner a tin drink
ing cup.
