Var- ' ner Is Chairman Architect’s Drawing Of Proposed Music Building At College A Brevard college expansion committee, composed of 17-promi- nent Brevard men with Mayor S. E. Varner as chairman, is now work ing out detailed plans for the much needed auditorium and music build ing which will supply the acute needs of the growing college and community as well, acording to Dr. E. J. Coltrane. Seating, capacity in the audito rium at the building will be 1250 and the stage will be sufficiently large enough to accomodate a 90 piece symphony orchestra, as shown by the plans submitted by Archi tect Henry I. Gaines. Members of this expansion com mittee, which were recently ap pointed by aproval of the college and the Brevard Chamber of Com merce, plan to launch a drive some time in the near future to raise approximately $250,000. Serving on the committee with Mayor Varner are Raymond F. Bennett, Willis Brittain, F. S. Best, Ralph H. Ram sey, Jr., Ralph R. Fisher, E. H. McBahan, Dr. Charles L. Newland, Alex H. Kizer, Charles M. Douglas, O. H. Orr, Verne P. Clement, Lew is P. Hamlin, Ed M. Anderson, John I. Anderson, J. M. Gaines and Rev. W. G. McFarland. The new building, which will be the most imposing structure on the Brevard college campus, will be constructed between the James Addison Jones library, and the Mary Frances Stamey Memorial infirmary and will face the back entrance to the administration buUding, Dunham Hall. In the cur rent expansion program, it will head the lower Quadrangle, and will be situated on the new road circling the campus. According to President Coltrane, this will enable Brevard college to be of greater service to this com munity by bringing here artists and speakers of note, as well as serving as a place for religious conferences and cultural convoca tions. Prominent among the plans re cently worked out for this build ing area a projection room *for showing movies, and a suite for broadcasting and making record ings. A music library will be in cluded along with three large classrooms, five soundproof studios and 25 soundproof practice rooms. Pictured above is the architect’s drawing of the proposed new music building and auditorium at Brevard college. Estimated to cost some $250,000, the imposing structure will fill a great need at the local institution. In the near future the Brevard Chamber of Commerce will launch a campaign to raise funds locally for the building. The auditorium will be constructed so as to have perfect acous tics and to seat 1,250 persons. It will also be designed for community and college use, and a large num ber of sound-proof studios and a suite for broadcasting and recording are included in the plans. Hammond Organ Is Gift To College We have all no doubt heard and enjoyed the beautiful music which has been drifting up from the auditorium this semester. Well, these lovely sounds are coming from a new Hammond electric or gan, a gift from Mr. H. A. Dun ham, of Asheville, and another benefactor who chooses to remain anonymous. Mr. Dunham has been very active in aiding the college in the past, and at present is serv ing as a member of the board of trustees. The organ will be used primari ly for chapel services and to teach organ to the eight organ majors now attending Brevard. But however beautiful the organ itseK might be, it would be of lit tle value if there were not some one around who had the expert knowledge of playing it. We are therefore very fortunate to have with us this year Miss Caroline Gates, a new addition to the fac ulty. Miss Gates is a graduate of Grensboro college where she maj ored in organ. $7,000.00 In Books Ordered For Library / With the ordering of seven thousand dollars worth of new books, the J. A. Jones Memorial Library is following the expansion program now in evidence at Bre vard college. The new volumes will be delivered sometime this fall and will add much value to the collection of books now in the library. Mrs. Scroggs is now assisting Mrs. Parker in the library and is in charge of the circulation and reference dpeartments. Mrs. Park er has charge of the acquisition and cataloging of books. In addi tion to the two librarians, the library also has several student helpers who work durihg the day and evening. This year Mrs. Parker has in stituted a closed stack policy which will tend to preserve and prevent the mistreating of books. The cat alog system, used in all modern libraries, has also been put into effect and Mrs. Parker urges that every student aquaint himself with it.
