At a meeting of the board of
trustees of Brevard college, held
recently in High Point, it was de
cided that a campaign would be
launched immediately to raise
$75,000 for the erection of an ad
ministration building in honor of
Dr. Eugene J. Coltrane, president
of the institution.
The naming of this btiilding,
“Coltrane Hall,” will honor one
to whom honor is due, the trus
tees point out. “When Brevard
college was formed in 1934 by
the union of Rutherford college
and Weaver college, the trustees
wisely chose Dr. Coltrane for its
first president. Dr. Cbltrane
brought to his new position a broad
background of educational experi
ence, a sound philosophy of edu
cation based on this experience
and through training, deep relig
ious convictions of the Christian
way of life, and a zeal that is real
ly unequalled,” the chairman stat
ed.
The Brevard college expansion
committee of the Brevard cham
ber of commerce will raise the
money for the erection of Coltrane
HaU, and an attempt will be made
to contact all of Dr. Coltrane’s
friends, wherever they may be,
for contributions to this cause.
J. P. Porter has been appointed
by the expansion committee as di
rector for the campaign. At the
present time he is actively en
gaged in preparing considerable
literature on the proposed struc
ture. This literature will be mail
ed to all alumni of the institution,
Kiwanians in the Carolinas’ dis
trict, of which Dr. Coltrane is dis
trict governor, and other friends
of the school and its president.
The names of all donors will be
inscribed on a bronze plaque to be
placed in the interior of the build
ing and entitled, “Roll of Donors.”
The development of Brevard col
lege is a monument to Dr. Col
trane’s work. Director Porter said.
He pointed out that Brevard col
lege had grown from a struggling
institution with an endowment of
$60,000 and a campus valued at
$150,000 to an outstanding junior
college with an endowment of
$500,000 and a physical plant val
ued at $850,000. “During these
years Brevard college has become
so well known that its students
come from many states and sev
eral foreign countries. The record
made by former students who have
entered other colleges has been
above average,” he continued.
Director Porter describes the
proposed hall honoring Dr. Coltrane
as a two-story, fire proof brick
structure following the same arch-
itectual lines as the more recently
completed buildings on the cam
pus. It wUl house the offices of
president, director of public re
lations, business manager and bur
sar, registrar, dean of the college,
dean of guidance, and special room
for meetings of the board of trus
tees.
Members of the expansion com
mittee realize the impossibility of
personally contacting all of Dr.

Group Enjoys
Mountain Tour
Last Sunday, October 24, a three-
hour bus trip was enjoyed by 28
students and one chaperone. This
group was smaller than expected,
considering the fact that the affair
had been planned for the entire
student body.
The travelers left the college
about two o’clock Sunday after
noon, the weather making it an
ideal day for such a trip. The des
tination was Pisgah National For
est, and then to drive along the
new scenic drive. The driver of
the bus was instructed to stop at'
points of interest on the road, both
going and coming back. During
these stops' the camera fans in
the crowd took pictures of the
mountains and valleys
On the return trip, all the na
ture enthusiasts wanted to see
Looking Glass Falls. This was the
last point of interest visited by the
group * before returning to the
campus.
Many of the students exprsesed
a hope for more trips of this na
ture.

life and taxes. When you finish
one, you’re through with the other.
