October 29, 1948 THE CLARION PAGE SEVEN Tornadoes Primed For Bulldogs Riggins, AAcKissick And HippsTo Lead Attack On Gardner-Webb Rambling With The Sports Editor By ED MOORE, BILL MARTIN LOST FOR G-W GAME ... “Bam Bam” Martin received a back injury during the game against High Point “B”, and chances are that he won’t play at all against Gardner-Webb tomorrow night. Even if things improve by then, he probably won’t display any of those long runs he made in the last game. Lanue Floyd, who had a bad ankle, and Walter Owens, who was in the same shape Martin is, will plaj^n the game tomoirow night, however. The Tornadoes still lack their full strength because these boys haven’t fully recovered from injuries received in the Lee-McRae and High Point games. , • * • ALL WE’VE GOT . . . These boys and girls who will be here for Homecoming are going to notice our school spirit at the game, so let’s really give out with the yells. There .will be a pep rally Friday night at seven o’clock in the auditorium. Let’s all try to be there. • V T GIRLS’ FOOTBALL TEAM ... Talent Night, which will be held around the twelth of Noven^er, is featuring an all girl football team. This is only one in the large variety of acts which will be in the form of a four ring circus. “The Greatest Show on Earth!” ♦ « « TRAVEL BY AIR ... The Tornadoes have lived up to their name in the past two games by displaying many beautiful passes. “Little” Hipps has really put Tornado power behind that “Pigskin.” That’s the way Riggins likes ’em. The Homecoming game against Gardner-Webb will also show Brevard’s passing power on wide end runs. Gardner-Webb has the heaviest and strongest line we have come against this year. K old records hold true, we will be the victors of that game. Taking sports as a whole, with only one exception, Brevard has beat Gardner-Webb at all the home games, and lost all games at Gardner- Webb; . * * * . KNOWS HER TEAMS . . . Mrs. Mahota Rankin, who lives with her hustband. Footsie, in the married folks apartments, seems to be a whizz at picking football winners. In The Transylvania Times con test, Mahota has received honorable mention for the past two weeks. She’U be coming up with lots of theatr^ tickets at this rate! • • « PRACTICE FIELD ECHOES . . . Hit that dummy McGill—you move like an old lady! Swicegood says, “Get mean, get mean.” Is that right “Mo”? Get your supper off your mind, “Stinky”. “That’s all today, boys, take three laps and 'shower down.” BRYANT Radio Shop Service — Sales SIMPSON’S BARBER SHOP Haircuts — Shaves Baker Jewelers Watches — Diamonds POOLE’S MEN SHOP Headquarters For All College Men HUNTER’S Army and Navy Goods STROLLER’S INN Duckworth Motor Company MARTIN’S BUS CO, TRIPS FOR SPORTS EVENTS PICNICS — OUTINGS PHONE 700 (( Little” Hipps m “LITTLE” HIPPS, 130 pounds of hard-running tailback, will lead the Tornadoes against the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs when the two junior college elevens meet tomorrow night on the high school field. Hershey has display ed some brilliant broken-field running and proved to be an ac curate passer in the last few Brevard games and is expected to see' much action tonight. There are few persons with cour age enough to admit they haven’t got it. The secret of success is a secret to many people. Floyd To Return To Squads Martin Is Out With Injury LONG’S DRUG STORE B E L K ’ S Jones News Stand “A Book Store of Periodicals” Sarratt’s Cleaners For Cleaning to Perfection With most of their injured play ers recovered, the Tornadoes will be set to break loose with lighting - fury when they meet Gardner- Webb’s Bulldogs in the homecom ing game tomorrow night. Clifton Riggins, who caught a touchdown pass against High Point last week, and Hershey Hipps, ^Kvard’s hard- running tailback, -wm be in top jShape for the contest. John Mc- Kissick, another h a r d-running back is also ready and is expected to see plenty of action with “Bam Bam” Martin not expected to play. The boys from Gardner-Webb have a strong team and made a fine showing against Lees-McRae week before last. But the Torna does will be favored to wrap up the game before a large home coming crowd. Lose To Lees-McRae The Tornadoes, playing one of their best games of the season, found the going a little too rough a couple of weeks ago when they were defeated 13-7 by the Lees- McRae Bobcats in Banner Elk. Leading 7-6 going into the clos ing minutes of the game, the local boys were defeated when a long Bobcat pass connected for a touch down. Clifton Riggins scored the lone tally for Brevard on a 45 yard pass. Walter Owens, Dick Medlin, John McKissick, and Bruce Jamerson received injuries during the fight and saw limited action the follow ing week in the game with High Point “B”. ■ High Point ■ invaded Brevard last week and defeated a weak but game Tornado eleven 19-7. Playing with a substitute line and a reserve backfield due to injur ies, Brevard was no niatch for the boys from High Point. The Brevard score came when Hipps heaved a 40 yard pass which Rig gins gathered in on the High Point 20 and carried over the double stripes. Even a bootlegger gets low in spirits at times.
