PAGE EIGHT THE CLARION May 27, 1949 College Athletes Honored At Banquet, Letters Given In Various Sports Recently Lions, Kiwanians And Ro- tarians Sponsor Event. Tuttle Is Speaker Brevard college athletes were honored Monday night at a ban quet in the school cafeteria which was sponsored by the three civic clubs of Brevard, the Lions, Ki- wanis and Rotary clubs. Athletic Director Bob Andrews awarded letters in the various sports to some 65 students and thanked the athletes for their con tribution to the sports program at Brevard College. Eev.- Lee Tuttle, pastor of the Central Methodist church in Ashe ville, and chairman of the athletic committee of the board of trustees of Brevard college, was the prin cipal speaker of the evening and chose as his topic, “The Game of Life.” Mr. Tuttle said that life was like a baseball game and that a person always had three strikes. He compared the bases on the dia mond to the moral code. “You can’t get far away from them or else you get in trouble,” he de clared. The speaker was introduced by Dr. E. J. Coltrane, president of the institution, and Ray Swink was master of ceremonies. In response to his address of \yelcome, Clifton Riggins expressed appreciation bn behalf of the athletes for the fine banquet. Alexander Speaks Jack Alexander, head football coach during the 1948 season, also spoke briefly on the program. Frank McGill and Hersey Hipps talked on the football season, and Grady King summarized the bas ketball year. He was second high est scorer in the conference per game. The baseball season was re viewed by Lander Beal. Special music was furnished by soloists, LaNue Floyd, Loise Strat ton, Betty Boykin, with Miss Caroline Gates at the piano. The college orchestra, under the direc tion of Bob Davis, played during the dinner hour. Clifton Riggins was awarded a trophy for being voted the most outstanding player by his fellow teammates.
