DECEMBER 9, 1950 CLARION PAGE FIVE Basketball Tornadoes Begin Season Games December 12 RAMBLIN’ WITH RANDALL By JOHN RANDALL f .IN-.—»-• . The 1950-51 edition of the Brevard College football Tornadoes ended its season Thanksgiving afternoon with a 0-0 tie with the tradi tional rival, Mars Hill. Some people will remember this year’s team as one that scored 72 points to the opposition’s 158; or as one that won three, tied one, and lost four. Yet, despite the mediocrity of these fig ures, the season had its superlative moments—moments that a lot of people in this year’s student body won’t easily forget. Maybe all the best ones aren’t here, but here’s trying: Most Optimistic—When UNDEFEATED Brevard left the field after the PJC game. Most saddening—When Bernie Welch broke his arm. Most maddening—When West Georgia roughed up Jim Dillard. Most disappointing—When the Tornadoes blew a 19-0 lead in the second half and lost to North Greenville, 19-20. Most pleasing—When the team got revenge for Jim Dillard by beating West Georgia 7-6. Most enthusiastic—When the cheering section arrived at Lees- McRae. Most bloodthirsty—Martha Washam, every time a Tornado tackled an opponent. Most nearly drowned—Everybody at the Blue Ridge game. (Best swimmer—Gene West.) To give credit where credit is due is only fair. Credit for those ?ood times and good memories belongs to our hard working football team and its coaches. In particular, laurels go to Jim Dillard, Bill Beasley, Tommy Mitchell, Bam Bam Peele, Bernie Welch, David Dale, Gene West, Reid Prillaman, David Price, James Barker, Joe Jack Wells, and to all the other members of the team who made this season this successful season—a possibility. The sports editor, the sports staff, and everyone connected with this paper wish to extend to you their grateful congratulations and their best wishes for your successful future. Thanks, fellows. Tornadoes Tie In Scoreless Game On Thanksgiving Day The Brevard Tornadoes and the Mars Hill Lions met on Thanksgiv ing day to try to settle the gridiron dispute of the 1950 season. Both teams were greatly handicapped by a number of injuries and a loss of outstanding players. The Tornadoes kicked off, but the Lions were forced to punt af ter three downs. The Brevard line seemed to be too much for them. The Tornadoes took the punt on their own 15. With a mighty puff, they marched for a first and ten, only to lose the pigskin on a fum ble. The Lions then had a second chance to display their power. They did and marched down to the Tornado 14, where the “Big Wind” held and received the ball on downs. Again the Tornadoes be- ban to roll. A pass from Mitchell to Beasley was complete up to the 36 and was good for another first down. Mitchell puffed his way up to the 48 and tallied the third first down. Beasley crossed the midfield marker, only to fumble and have Mars Hill recover. Mars Hill fumbled in turn on fourth down and Watson recovered for the Tornadoes on their own 34. West picked up two yards around end. Mitchell then gained 18 yards and a first down on a beautiful play. The Tornadoes got all the way to the 19 of the Lions before a holding penalty ruined their chances. Mars Hill marched to the Torna does’ 40 before their attack stalled. A punt and a penalty set Brevard back on its own one yard line, a point from which they were forced to punt. The Lions were kept from a touchdown only because the of ficials called a touchdown back on an offside penalty. Mars Hill end ed the half madly throwing passes. West received the second half kick-off and returned for 30 yards to the Brevard 31, a point from which Brevard was forced to kick after three unproductive downs. After a series of fumbles, kicks, and intercepted passes, Brevard found itself on the Lions’ 21-yard line and decided to try a field goal. West’s kick was blocked, and the Tornadoes lost their last chance to break the 0-0 tie. The Lions, too, had lost their fire. The CHRISTMAS GREETINGS From SLEDGE RADIO Sales and Service game ended in a deadlock about which neither team felt too en thusiastic. Outstanding players for the Tor nadoes were West, Mitchell, Wat son, Price, Beasley, and Mann. For the Lions, Corn, Dunn, Taylor, Martin, Roberts, and Reece led the attack. The game was attended by a capacity crowd, celebrating homecoming for both Mars Hill and Brevard. Best Wishes And A Happy New Year From BRIDGES COAL & OIL CO. North Greenville is reported to have a very strong team this year. The contest will be a con ference game, Brevard’s only game before Christmas. The Tornadoes will have a team built around a nucleus of veterans, Ken Davis, Bill Beasley, Willard Bufkin, Harold Watson, Sherman Canter, and Bernie Welch. About 15 to 20 boys have been practic ing since the last Friday in No vember, but the freshmen addi tions to the team are few. Some sophomores who did not play last year and probably only two or three newcomers will go to make out the team. Bernie Welch is not practicing at present because of a broken arm collected during the football season, another sophomore, a transfer student, Jim Dillard, al so has an old football injury that will keep him out until after Christmas.
