COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES ARE ON SUNDAY
Student Body Elections Held With
Harrison Chosen As New President
Following a week and a half of flaring campaigns, bril
liant posters and outstanding orations by aspiring candi
dates and their supporters, the Student council presented
these proposed officers for student body election on April
24. Wilburn Harrison was named president, defeating
Bobo McMakin and Ellen Faulkner. Harrison’s votes
doubled the number obtained by the other two candidates.
Elected as vice-president was Joe Hipps, who defeated
Carolyn Hamilton. By a slight margin, Jane Ann Hart
won the office of secretary, opposing Betty Lineberry.

member of the dean’s list and art
editor of the CLARION.
Vice-president Joe Hipp is son
of Rev. and Mrs. J. E. Hipp of
Charlotte. He is, additionally, a
member of the Christian Fellow
ship club, Delphian Literary soci
ety and dean’s list.
The council’s new secretary,
Jane Ann Hart, is a town student,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William
A. Hart. She is president of the
Baptist Student union, and a
member of the Christian Fellow
ship club, the Euterpean Literary
society and the International Re
lations club.
Rachel Franklin, daughter of
Mrs. Ira F. Vance, filled the newly-
crcated office of social chairman.
She is a member of the Mnemosy-
nean Literary society. Glee club
and Christian Fellowship club.
CLARION and PERTELOTE
Editors Are Also Chosen
In the final run-off the new edi
tors and business managers of the
CLARION and PERTELOTE staffs
were unchallenged.
Tom Neal, Jr., son of Mr. and
Mrs. W. T. Neal, Greensboro, was
named CLARION editor. He is as
sociate editor of the CLARION, a
member of Cliosophic Literary so
ciety, dean’s list. Sigma Pi Alpha,

Alumni Reunion To
Bring Many Guests
The Brevard College Alumni as
sociation will hold its annual
meeting in the newly renovated
auditorium in Dunham Hall May
26 at 2:30 p. m., and the alumni
who wish to do so may remain
overnight on the campus. Dr. E.
H. Nease, Charlottee district su
perintendent of the Methodist
church, will be guest speaker.

Government
Student Council To
Publish Handbook;
The Student council of the Stu
dent Government association is
sponsoring the publication of a
handbook which will be available
by the end of May, according to
Anne Lewis, editor, and Clarence
Blythe, business manager.
The handbook, which will be
sent to each student sending an
application for admittance for the
fall semester, will contain the con
stitution, the social regulations,
the point system, the demerit sys
tem, a synopsis of all recognized
campus organizations, a map of
the campus, the school song, and
some school yells. This informa
tion will cover approximately 24
pages.
The cover for the booklet will be
a scene lifted from the campus and
etched by Wilburn Harrison. The
recently erected sign at the front
entrance is the central point. The
colors for the cover are blue and
VA'hite.

SUMMER SCHOOL
OPENS JUNE 18
Ehlhardt Speaks On
Program; Choir Sings
Commencement exercises for 70
candidates for graduation will be
held May 27 at 4 p. m. in the
James Addison Jones library. The
Rev. George Brinkmann Ehlhardt
will award the diplomas and give
the commencement address, which
will be broadcast over radio sta
tion WPNF.
The commencement ceremonies
will culminate a full weekend for
43 girls and 27 boys, of whom 8
are residents of Brevard and Tran
sylvania county.
Originally scheduled for the
same time was the inauguration of
President Ehlhardt, which had to
be postponed because of lack of
housing accommodations for vis
itors.
GLEE CLUB PRESENTS
PROGRAM OF MUSIC
Presenting a program of music
for the activities will be Prof.
Bruce A. Livengood, Prof. Francis
B. Price, and Brevard College Glee
club. The concert will feature
Mr. Livengood, head of the music
department, at the organ to play
“Prelude on Christ Whose Glory
Fills the Skies” (Edmendson) and
a march “Tannhauser” (Wagner).
Mr. Price, voice instructor, wM
sing “Built on a Rock” (Christian
sen). The Glee club will sing
“Now Let the Full-Toned Chorus”
(.Bedell); “Hallelujah, Amen”
(Handel). Miss Susan Graham, in
structor in piano, will be accom
panist.
ALUMNI, TRUSTEES
VISIT ON CAMPUS
Included in the activities of the
weekend will be the annual meet
ing of the Brevard College Alumni
association, a Glee club concert,
and a meeting of the Board of
Trustees of the college. Inune-
diately following the graduation
cxercises on Sunday, students and
their parents will be guests at a
buffet supper in the college cafe
teria.
Dean Stevenson has announced
plans for a 9-week summer ses
sion. Classes will start June 18
and continue through August 18.
A student may register for a
maximum of 9 hours. There will
be 10 instructors to teach courses
in the following departments: Eng
lish, mathematics, science, reli
gion, history, political science, art,
and music.
The college has planned several
interesting trips in connection
with the summer session. Plans
have been completed for trips to

Marshals Named

The Office of the President has
named the following students as
marshals for commencement ex
ercises: Sarah Carol Carter, chief;
Perry Wilburn Harrison, Mary
Louise Dean, David Wellington
Johnson, Jr., and Carl Clifford
Outen.
Chosen as marshals are those
having the five highest averages
among the undergraduates. Qiiel
is the person with the highest av
erage.
