Page SIX CLARION Students Vying For Positions On Team The basketball season is under way! Each weekday afternoon atoout twenty-five hopefuls turn out for a hard session of practice, which usually includes a long scrim mage. Although no official word has been received, the first string in some of the current practice sessions has consisted of Hoyle, Malcolm, Eller, Stamey, and Bridg es. These boys seem to work well together, but there is a strong sec ond string composed of McIntosh, King, Phipps, Walton, and Brooks. Those second stringers aren’t duck-meat for anybody, and it is quite probable that these two line ups will be changed around some what by the time you read this. After this first group comes the third and fourth strings, from which many of the first ten play ers came. This means that some of them are excellent material and will be heard from before too long. Another interesting point to no tice about our team is that of the first two strings, only three are sophomores. During the past two years, only twelve to fifteen men turned out for basketball, thus making it hard for the coach to even have a good scrimmage, much less put a good team on the hard wood. With a new spirit, a new group of players, and a new coach, Brevard’s basketball future is tak ing on a countenance of cheerful confidence, confidence that this will be one of our most successful years -on the court for the past three or four seasons. Everybody now realizes the mis take he made in not picking the right number of people who would vote in the election, and half of us realize why we picked the virong candidate. First, we must take into consideration the fact that the Del- phians beat the Clios for the intra mural football championship even though some students thought the Delphians were soundly outplayed. Second, Georgia Tech beat Duke by a much larger margin than anyone thought possible, even though they used dirty politics and caused “Country” Meadows to get thrown out of the game. If this does not entirely clear up the situation in your mind, consider this third fact: Washington’s Redskins lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers by 24-23 after being behind by 24-7. Dance Is Planned To Honor Sadie Hawkins Nancy Carson, president of the Euterpeans, announced today that the Euterpean society would spon sor the Sadie Hawkins day dance again this year. This dance has been an annual feature of the fall social calendar and by tradition has al ways ibeen sponsored by the Euter peans. November 22 has been set as the day in which poor Miss Hawkins, who had to chase her man (a prac tice which has since then become obsolete), will be honored. The Eu terpean society will chose from among the students pec^le to rep resent such famous characters as Dasiy Mae, Little Abner, Pappy and Mammy Yokum, Moonlbeam McSwine, Adoraible Jones, wolf-gal and pig gal. The dance will be held in the cafeteria starting at 7:30. As per usual the girls will ask the boys and present them with vegetable i W. A. A. Announces Break In Schedule Girls’ intramural basket ball games have been discontinued be cause varsity basketball practice starts Thursday, November 6. In the games played up to this time, the freshman have beaten the soph omores, the town students have beaten the sophomores and the freshmen beat the town students on Tuesday night, November 4, by a score of 58-35. Therefore, the freshmen are the tentative cham pions and receive 10 points tO'ward the intramural trophy. Miss Moseley and the president of the W. A. A., along with the managers of the freshmen, sopho mores and town students decided that it would be too hard on the girls to play in intramurals and on the varsity. Since there is a break in the intramural schedule in Feb ruary and March intramural bas ketball will be continued then. In the final game, high scorer for the freshmen was Lilian Carney with 27 points, closely followed by Jenny Morris with 19. High scorer for the town students was Doris Ferguson with 19 points. There was some good guarding on both teams. Versatility was shown by many of the girls on the court as they switched places and played well in both positions. Doris Fergu son, captain of the day students, said “I think the game should be played over, because the score was not a majority.” The freshmen now have 20 points toward the trophy since they won the touch football champion ship. - corsages when they go to the bar racks to call for them. Beware boys, Sadie’s ghost rides again. Smith & Gray Barber Shop Hidrcuts — Shaves — Shines and Showers New Addition Made On College Campus A new member has been added to the Brevard college family. No I. Q. or placement tests have been given nor has he been officially enrolled; for the time being he is content to breathe the air that sur rounds any institution of higher learning and now and then deliver a few deep, resounding remarks on any subject under discussion. This new and extremely interest ing and versatile member is Tiffen. Coach Fitzpatrick’s cocker spanSl. He is an extremely likeaible little fellow with a long bushy tail, big brown eyes and taffy colored hair. Tiffen makes his abode in Mr. White’s lot beside the boys’ bar racks. He has proved to be an ex cellent mimic, since he spends his time trying to find some mischief to get into and some studying to get out of—like most of his fellow students. Coach Fitzpatrick can be seen almost every morning of the week out at the lot by 7:00 feeding Tif fen and walking with him. It looks as though Tiffen has taken on the responsibility of keeping the coach in shape. When Tiffen was approached with a question that has been both ering most male students these days, he thought a minute and then gruffly said. Yes, he thought he’s to be deferred for another year, at least. Nu-Way Cleaners N.
