^ w ^ on j Clarion Volume XX BREVARD COLLEGE, DECEMBER 13, 1952 Number 3 CAMPUS ENTERING THE CHRISTMAS SEASON Theatre Group Is Guest Of College The Barter Theatre of Virginia was the entertaining guests of the college last Tuesday night, Dec. 9. This theatre which is on national tour is celeibrating its twentieth an niversary of bringing plays to vari ous parts of the country. They presented a three-act play by Sidney Howard, The Late Chris topher Bean, which is set entirely in the dining room of the Haggetts’ house not far from Boston. This play was first presented in New York, and has been adapted from a French play. The cast is made up of nine professional players. The male star is Owen Phillips who served also as director, and who has been seen in many Warner Brothers pictures. He was head of the department of drama at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, the school from which Mr. B. A. Livengood graduated. The female star, Dorothy La- Vern, is known as Miss Show Busi ness and is a veteran trouper. From her own stock company emerged Melvyn Douglas and Ralph Bellamy. She has also worked with such all- time greats as Mary Pickford and Lionel Barrymore. Because of the requirements of her profession, she lists the U. S. A. as her home town. The play was given in the Bre vard college gym and refreshments were sold by the Monogram club. Preparations Made For Annual Edition The Pertelote staff, headed by Caroline Davis, has succeeded in surmounting many of the obstacles that often confront an annual staff and are well on their way to getting this year’s annual started. Caroline has announced her com plete staff. They are: Nancy Car son, associate editor; Annie Lou Al lison, senior editor; Imogene Dick son, junior editor; Jennie Lou Al lison, women’s “sports editor; David Phipps, men’s sports editor; Fran ces Davidson, photography editor; June Craft, snapshots editor; Hilda Norwood, circulation; Jane Bishop, business manager; Elaine Walker, assistant business manager; Bill Whitesides, advertising manager;, assistant editor, Stowe Hull; typing editor, Ann Cowan; and tj^ists, Carolyn Thrower, Betty George, Matilda Bell, Betty Starnes, and Frances Weaver. Austin’s Studio will be -doing the pictures and make-up. Miss Louise Moseley will agaiij;‘^ct as faculty adviser. The Beat) boom is on and Dr. and Mrs. Haggett suddenly discov er that they have used the paintings of “The Late Christopher Bean’’ to stop leaks in the attic and to make a roof for the chicken coop. The laughs start early in this delightful comedy by the Barter The atre of Virginia, which was presented Tuesday night to a large au dience here in the Brevard college gym. Burglars Find That Them That Has Keeps Brevard always manages to pro vide the unexpected when even the unexpected is least expected. As Mr. Owen made his customarj' rounds on the night of Decembei' 4th, or rather the morning of De cember 5th, he little suspected that he would, in less than a moment’s time, be the canter of some rather fast action. It was 1:30 in the mornmg when three men approached the quiet, dark campus and outlined for the last time their plans to break open the safe in the business office. They stationed one man behind the steps on the side'of West Hall that faces Taylor Hall-so that he could be on watch for Mr. Owen. Mr. Owen, seeing a moving light in the business office, started toward the building to investigate when the man on the outside,ifired four shots at him, all mis¥iM‘ ' The Brevard, police identified the gun as an automatic from shoot ing .copper jackets, and were alsO sure that one of the men in the office was a heavy-set fellow. Ac cording to Policeman Dickson, the burglary was attempted by profes sional safe crackers. Fingerprint experts from Hen dersonville dusted the office for —Turn to Fage Five To Hold Dance On December ,19, Gym Students Assist In Halting Forest Fire Twenty boys responded to the early morning call of Coach Fitz patrick to assist in fighting a very serious forest fire in the Tennessee Gap area of Pisgah National For est on the seventh day of Novem ber. Coach Fitzpatrick called for volunteers after receiving an urg ent call for help from the forestry service. This call came at 1:15 a. m. and by 1:30 those able to go were dressed and waiting for the.,bus that was to take them to .the scene of the fire. The fire was located some 35 miles from Brevard in the Tennes see Gap. The trip was made in a little over an hour, and. J>y three that morning, the boys were ready to begin their task. The work to be done consisted mainly of scrap ing fire trenches around the fire and then to patrol the line in or der to prevent further breakovers. The grueling work seemed to never end as fire after fire seemed to spring up out of now-here behind the original blaze. One of the most tiresome jobs was carrying water from nearby springs. When morning came, everyone was dog tired and ready for relief, but the situation was still far from —Turn To Page Five With a theme of Blue Christmas, the Mnemosyneans and Delphians are co-sponsoring the annual Christ mas dance. On the night before the campus is vacated by homeward bound students, the sound of sweet music will pervade the cold, frost- nipped air and the soft rhythm of light feet will mean that the dancers are taking advantage of the music. It will be the last get-together be fore everyone separates for the holi days and most of the students are planning to attend. On December 19, the dance will be held in the college gym from 8:00 to 12:00. The decorations, in keeping with the meaning of the holiday, will be very simple. The color scheme will be blue and sil ver. There will be a Christmas tree decorated with snow and blue lights. The lights were donated for the dance by the chamber of com merce. The junior chamber of com merce and the juniors and seniors from the high school have been in vited. Frances Davidson is in charge of the refreshments, which will be served free of charge. Green and orange sherbet punch and cookies will be served. A band has been hired from Waynesville, the Charles Alley group. This is a ten-piece band and is widely known in this section. Eljune Walker and Mr. Francis Price are going to sing the “Sweet hearts” duet. Daphne Bowers wUl sing White Christmas. Carolyn B. Freeman will do a dance numiber. A final number will be a quartet composed of Rachel Headers, Stan- Hardin, Elaine Walker and Mr. Price, will sing Silent Night accom panied by everyone at the dance. Faculty To Honor Students At Party Brevard college students will be the guests of the faculty at a party on Tuesday night, December 16, at 8:30, in the school cafeteria. A committee of faculty members headed by Miss Moseley and con sisting of Mr. Fitzpatrick, Miss Len- sing, Mr. McClintock, and Miss Wheless, are in charge of making plans for the party. Tentative plans show that there will be a back ground of Christmas decorations with everyone enjoying the fun and fellowship of the Christmas season. This get-together is planned to better acquaint the faculty with the students and to get veeryone into the swing of the Christmas season. This will be the first of several Christmas events.
