A Beautiful Court

I NO! THAT t
1 COULDN’T BE !
I I
The following is a telephone con
versation in May, 1964:
“Oh, Mabel, you really should
have gone to that baseball game at
Brevard. Just everyone of those
1954 graduates were there. That
team is really making a name for
itself since Ben Brooks took over
the coaching job. You remember
Ben don’t you, such a sweet guy.
Too bad he still has that broken
heart. Yes, he’s still carrying a
torch for Betty Lee Starnes, and
here she’s been married to John
Marona for eight years now. Speak
ing of the Maronas, they were there
Cadillac, and their six kids. One
of their little boys almost got run
over when David Griggs came run
ning down the bleachers selling
everything from popcorn to port
able drinking fountains. He always
was quite a salesman, guess he
must have been able to sell him
self to Mary Frances Meachum.
They’ve been going steady for five
years now.
As I sat there I spied Beth Jones
walking by so called to her. The
first thing she showed me was her
new diamond, her fifth. When I
asked if Nick had given it to her,
she looked puzzled and said “Nick,
who? Why you don’t mean Nick
Williams, why he and Jim Elliott
were sent up the river a couple of
years ago when they stole a car to
take a couple of gals swimming.
You just can’t tell about these
preachers to be can you?” Beth
was carrying a huge poster around
that said “Vote Fortune in the
next election and be Fortunate.”
It seems that Frances Fortune is
planning on running as the first
woman candidate for president
\es, that’s right President of Bre
vard college. I wonder what new
rules she’ll put into effect.
Oh, Mabel, I saw Evelyn Ledford,
well that is she was Evelyn Led
ford. She and Willie Woodlief got
married soon after they left Bre
vard in ’54. She had three little
kids with her and knowing how she
likes kids, I told her I was happy
for her. She very nonchalantly re
plied, “Oh, we have four more at
home.” I asked about her old
roomo Jennie Lou Morris. She re
plied that the last she had heard,
Jennie had gone to New York to
get a job typing. Besides, Gene is
getting transferred there too.
Speaking of New York it seems as
if many of that graduating class are
playing on Broadway now. Dene
Duckett is singing in Carnegie Hall
in two weeks, Charles Summer
ville and James Richardson have a
comedy act on TV, Nadine Wil
liams is playing the lead part in
"Ruby: Gpnt^,” and Harry Patter
son has pne of the best known
dance bands in the Big City.
Harold and Gena White were
there, too. Gena was excited as
usual. It seems that their oldest
daughter who is in the third grade
was chosen as “Little Miss May
Queen” at Buckshoals Grammar
School.
You remember the country girls
