Justice Welcomes You
To Brevard College
By HENRY JUSTICE
President Student Body
Once again I wish to extend a
warm and cordial welcome to the
new freshmen and returning sopho
mores. I believe we have one of
the finest student bodies this year
in the history of Brevard college.
The student council is looking for
ward to a bigger and better year
with your support and cooperation.
Without your support, it is power
less.
Last year the student council set
up the social chairman as an offi
cer in the council. This year the
social chairman and his committee
have made plans, which will in
clude all students, for activities
every week-end. For the next three
weeks there will be three activities
on Saturday. A cook-out in Pisgah
Forest, a theatre party, and a home
party will be conducted. The stu
dents wiU divide into three groups.
Each week one group will attend
one of the activities. The following
week they wiU rotate. A great deal
of planning has gone into this pro
gram, and we feel that some fine
programs have been scheduled. AH
of you will want to participate.
We have yet to elect a faculty

Brevard For Students^
With Special Purpose
The following is an excerpt from'
the North Carolina Christian Ad
vocate written by our President,,
Robert H. Stamey.
Twenty-five years ago it was not
uncommon to find people who bef-
lieved that the junior college was
a junior college simply because it
was too weak to become a senior
college. Today the junior college
has come to be recognized for what
it is, an institution of higher edur
cation that is doing a specialized-
job in a highly effective manner.
These specialized activities are‘
strikingly apparent in the field of
terminal education. Here the cur
riculum is geared to the needs of
the terminal student and he is giv
en a diploma when he satisfactorily
completes Jiis unit of work.
This specialization is equally ap
parent when students enter the
junior college with the idea of
transferring to senior institutions..
The entire energy of the junior col
lege is centered upon the needs of
freshmen and 'sophomores. It is of
primary importance to have in
structors whose training and inteiv
ests make thein especially compe
tent as teachers of this age group.
These specialists are needed for
the gap between high school and
college is wide, and in many in^
stances work of the first two years
is the most difficult.
Other advantages grow out o£
this special attention. Generally
speaking he has more opportuni
ties for developing his capacities^
for leadership, since he does not
have the disadvantage of compet
ing with upper classmen. The ad
vantage of economy is apparent
The junior college offers a real'
bargain in education because its-
students do not have to help de>
fray the expenses of the junior
and senior years where equipment
and instructional services are more
costly.
As a “college with a program for
students with a purpose,” Brevard
college proudly takes its place
among the junior colleges of the-
nation and sincerely seeks to do its:
part in the significant role these-
institutions are playing in the.'
drama of American education.
