Our Who’s Who list is made up
of our talented, versatile person
alities who contribute much to-the
development and life of Brevard
college. The titles ot Mr. and Miss
Freshman and Mr! and Miss Sopho
more have been awarded to out
standing Kenneth Otis Beard, Juli-
anne Harris, Joe Wilson and Martha
/Ruth Tysinger.
Kenneth Otis Beard, 'better
known as “Buddy,” our well-named
Mr. Freshman, hails from Ashe-
'ville, N. C., where he graduated
from Biltmore high school. He is
undecided as to what his career
will be, but is contemplating busi
ness. As a hobby, he collects
matchbook covers, spends his free
time typing, listening to gospel
quartets and watching basketball
games, and his favorite foods are
mashed potatoes and banana pud
ding. Buddy’s pet peeve is “people
■acting chiMish.” His philosophy of
life is “Live every day to the full
est and do not worry about tomor
row because it will take care of it
self.” Mr. Freshman lends his spare
time and a helping hand to su;h or
ganizations on campus as the Del
phian society, Christian Fellowship
tlub, and is a hard working mem
ber of the Clarion staff.
Julianne Harris, our pretty Miss
Freshman with the sparkling smile
and gay personality is a graduate
of Gastonia high si^ool. Her hoto-
bies include reading and, creative
, writing with bridge playing as an
other enjoyable pastime. Julie’s pet
peeve is “sarcasm” and she is “real
gone” on chow mein, her most de
lightful food. Miss Fr&hman is
studying to be a laboratory tech
nologist, and her life’s guiding
rule is “I can do all things through
Christ who strengtheneth me.”
Julie’s extra-curricular activities on
campus include tiie position of sec-

retary and treasurer of the Mne-
mosynean society, a member of the
Women’s Athletic association,
French club, and Christian Fellow
ship club.
Now the spotlight is focused bn
Joe Wilson, .Mr. Sophomore, who
is from Charlotte, N. C. A gradu
ate of North Mecklenlburg high
school, Joe is majoring in music
here at the college and is going to
be a minister of music. After his
education ait Brevard is terminat
ed, he plans to continue his stud-
ieis at Duke university. Mr. Sopho
more’s pet peeve is “'people who
eat apples” and he fairly dotes on
rare steak. Joe enjoys reading and
watching movies and divides his
much-in^demand time and abilities
among the Music club, of which he
is president, the Spanish club, of
which he serves as vice president
of the Delphian society and MSF
council, in which he is a member.
Petite and charming Martha Ruth
Tysinger, known to everyone on
campus as “Sally” holds the title
of Miss Sophomore. Sally calls
Matthews, N. C., home now, but is
originally from Waxhaw, N. C. A
religion major, she lives by the
golden rule “Do unto others as you
would have them do unto you.” Her
hotobies are collecting jewelry,
reading and participating in sports,
and dating her fiancee, Paul Cra-

school, but here at Brevard college
he’s doing well in all he attempts.
Basketball is what we’re speaking
of now. I heard someone say the
other day that he was the team’s
“Silent Sparkplug.” This is due to
the quiet manner he uses on the
court. Suddenly from out of no
where he comes in to shdot or steal
the ball. He is one of tfhe leading
men on this year’s team with his
fine display of defensive work.
Jason Smith is without any reas
onable doubt one of the finest guys
you’ll ever meet. Jason is a boy
who a few years ago thought he
would never get to play ball again.
It was discovered that hs had a lit
tle trouble with his “ticice.’.” By
staying out of sports for one ye"ar
in high school and leading the
clean wholesome life that he lives,
this trouble was soon overcome.
Jason is 6’ 2” and weighs about
185 lbs. He is a native of Brevard
and a member of the Methodist
church.
Jason has displayed this year he
ihas the real qualities of a basket-
ImII player. He can shoot from just
about any spot and is a whale of a
.team man. His favorite sihot is the
'• jump sihot, with the one hand push.
He belongs to the MSF and Del-
phians. While attending Brevard
high he was a member of the foot-
iball and basketball teams. Among
his club activities he was active
in the Monogram club and Key
club.
When asked what he thought
about Brevard college, he said,
“Most of all I like the Christian
atmosphere and the friendly peo
ple.” Jason is a freshman and will
be back next year.
Fans, here’s one for Ripley’s
“Believe It or Not.” Tommy Cassa-
dy, the co-captain of our basket
ball team, never played baskeUball
in high school. Tommy has been
one of the mainstays all year with
an average of 10.2 for the Torna
does. I finally squeezed more out
of this lad, and he said he did play
in junior high school. He had ex
perience in the , Charlotte city '
league. While playing the role erf
iplayer-coach his team rolled up a
record of 14 wins and no defeats.
Last year he played on the team
and was seventh man in the line
up. This year Tommy has really
come into his own, with the fine
record mentioned above. He’s a
cracker jack ball handler as well as
a team man and a fine defensive
player. His team spirit and love of
'the game make him a great com
petitor.
His hobbies are golf, softball,
and the girls’ dorm. Cassady says
he’d rather play basketball than
sleep, well, that kiud of attitude
always comes from a fine athlete.
Tommy is “extra pleased” this
season with the fine school spirit
which has been displayed.
ven. Sally’s pet peeve is “People
who think they are better than
anybody else” and -her favorite food
is chicken. Miss Sophomore ranks
(high in the activities on campus,
serving as co-chairman of the
Christian Fellowship club, treasur
er of the Euterpeao s'ociety, a memr
ber of the Christian Council and
captain of the Green team.
