-the clarion March 22, 1957 age roui CLUB CAPERS by CHARLES HILBERS Miss Francis told me that we may not be able to climb punt Everest like Mr. Dyhrenfurth but, certainly we can take a hike to Dunn’s Rock this Sunday. The ex pedition will leave from the front of the Ad Building at 2:00 cut a cool trail for that Rock. This hiking is great fun! The night before we go home for the spring holidays, there wiU be a semi-formal dance in the base ment of the Women’s Residence Hall. Seems like a long time since we had a dance. See you there. The newly formed EMA is rock ing right along. At a called meet ing on Monday, the 11th, the club decided to send representatives to Engineering in Action, the 1957 Annual Engineers’ Show at Duke University. The show was the 14th and 15th of March at the Univer sity in Durham. Some of the in teresting highlights these repre sentatives saw were: an analog computer, a guided missile dis play, a scale model of the atomic powered submarine, and a 500,000- volt lightning generator, to men tion but a few. The MSF is an active group on rbe campus. Last Sunday they con cluded a series of programs on dif ferent religions when Mrs. Roy dis cussed the Moravian Movement. Some of the other religions they have studied and had guest speak ers from are: Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, Baptist, Lutheran, and Methodist. Benny Martin has been elected President for next year. A group of eight students, Mrs. Randolph, and Mr. and Mrs. Roy will attend the state MSM conference, being held this week end at Greensboro. Jimmy Calla way will preside over the opening session of this conference. Good going Jimmy! The group has some interesting programs lined up for the rest of the semester. ’There will be a movie on boy-girl rela tions, followed by a discussion of the movie the next meeting. They will put on an Easter pageant, and Ole Borgen will lead a discussion on The Resurrection Easter Sun day night. At the next to the last meeting a cook out is President Stamey will speak at the last meeting of the year. The business girls took a field trip to Asheville a couple of weeks . ago; Betty told me that, on the way iback the snow got so deep that i their bus broke an axle. They had ito wait forty-five minutes for [some brave Brevard College men to come along and rescue them. ! Someone has suggested a com petitive skit night. The Freshmen and Sophomores are cooking up something now; why don t we have one between some of the clubs on campus? The Masquers presented a skit and fun night a couple of weeks I ago. Everyone who attended had I a great time and really enjoyed the talent displayed at the show. ! Edgar Israel was the master of cer- [emonies; Shirley Thompson and ! David Jackson, who hail from Cal- lifornia and was formerly an Ar thur Murray dance instructor, gave their modern interpretation of the mambo; Mary Sue Drum did a dra matic reading; Heyward McElveen danced the Charleston to some of the greatest music I’ve heard lately; Edgar Israel changed hats several times; Doris Jean Curto recited a story of “Luigi” in Ital ian dialect; and Shirley Parsons and Jeannette Miller portrayed a scene from “Anastasia”. Shirley played the part of Anastasia and Jeannette, the part of her grand mother. Kappa Chi Feiiawship has been behind a commendable Lenten pro ject. Every night or so members canvass the dorms for unneeded pennies and loose change which they will send to a children’s home 'In ttaly. Everyone shoujd give whenever and whatever they are able to. S R p E 0 V R I T E S W by l. g. deyton The Brevard College Tornadoes open this year’s baseball season next Wednesday afternoon when they invade South Carolina to take on the North Greenville nine. From all indicatiorls, Brevard should field a strong team this sea son despite the fact that they lost several lettermen from last years team. Observers of the practices are very optimistic aibout our 'chances in the conference this year. Because of the weather, Coach Martin has had very few opportun ities to give his boys workouts on the field but he has had his pitch ers working in the gym since the end of basketball season. Gil Coan, a former major league star has been assisting Coach Mar tin with the team and he has giv en the boys many helpful tips. Brevard’s first home game does not come until April 15, when they play the Mars Hill Lions in a sin gle game. Women’s Intramarals Until now, due to lack of infor mation, women’s intramural sports have not been included in the Clarion. The Honorary Field Hockey Ross Wingo, President of this or ganization, said that the Club had planned a retreat to Pisgah Inn for the last weekend in April. The Kappa Chi is a fraternity composed of students who are planning to de vote their lives to full-time Chris tian service. The Phi Theta Kappa, a national honor fraternity, met to discuss the national meeting in Loughten, Oklahoma, in April. Dr. Burt Loomis, advisor, outlined the meeting and the trip to Oklahoma. This group will convene here at Brevard College next year. Team includes such stars as; Lois Gamble, Eunice Jones, Betty Brad ley, Audrey Honeycutt, Barbara Davis, Sarah Middleton. Jane All red, Sarah Fortune, Louise McTag- gart and Laverne Sweeney. Carolyn Reed won the Hockey Stick award this year.
