Trustees Convene For
Spring Meeting
The Brevard College Board of
Trustees convened for their
spring meeting on the college cam
pus Friday, May 2. The special
committees met at 10:00, and the
board met at 11:00.
During the meeting it was an
nounced that at least 400 stu
dents are expected to enroll next
year. The endowment resources to
tal over one-half million dollars
and income from endowment last
year amounted to $32,000, the
board was told. Vice President
Siarrfty announced that over a mil
lion dollars have been spent on
new buildings and remodeling old
ones since the extensive building
program began in 1951. A school
budget of $479,000 was adapted for
next year.
The nomination of ten new trus
tees was approved. The nomina
tions are to be submitted to the
WNC conference for approval.

A. Craig Phillips, Winston-Salem;
Hugh Massey, Waynesville; Philip
C. Brownell, Pisgah Forest; Greer

Thirteen board members whose
terms are expiring this year were
elected. Dr. Bmbree Blackard,

Everyone Invited
To Picnic May 18
At Camp Straus

On Sunday, May 18, 1958. the
Men’s Assembly of Brevard College
v/ill sponsor a picnic to be held at
Ci.mp Straus. All of the students of
the college are invited to this pic
nic which will begin at 4:00 P. M.
and last until all the students leave.
In addition to taking the after
noon meal there, the picnickers
will take advantage of the excel
lent recreational facilities of Camp
Straus. The afternoon will be high
lighted by tennis, softball, horse
shoe pitching, and hiking.
Everyone is invited, and it is
hoped they will have an enjoy
able time.
The many clubs found on the
campus are now in the process of
electing their officers for the year
1958-59. The ones elected are:

Garner Elected New
President; Wilson,
Miller Also Chosen
The votes were very close in the
hotly contested election held on
the Brevard College campus last
week. After a run-off between
Charles Garner and Boibby Tickle
for the presidency, Garner emerg
ed the victor and the president of
the student body for the 1958-’59
term. To assist Garner in his new
duties, Harold Wilson was elected
vice-president and Mildred Miller
as secretary - treasurer. The duties
planning the social events on cam
pus fell into the hands of Burl Hull
after he won over Edith Houck by
a small margin of votes.
To fill the other high positions
on campus, Carolyn Wright was
elected Editor of “The Pertelote”,
Gail Bonnell as Business Manager
of “The Pertelote” and Mary Allyn
Reynolds as as editor of “The Clar
ion.”
Garner was overjoyed with his
victory and had this to say to the
students: “I vnsh to thank each one
of you for your votes. Your sup
port and God’s help have won this
high position for me. I shall try
to the best of my ability to no'bly
fulfill this honor you have bestow
ed upon me. Again I wish to thank
you.”
All of the newly - elected offi
cers were very excited about their
victories, and they had only the
highest praise for their opponents.
One of the newly - elects had this
to say, “I didn’t think I was going
to make it for a while. This has
been a hair - raising experience
for me, and I will never forget it.”
The election was very success
ful and the voter participation was
outstanding. Each candidate is to
be congratulated for his outstand
ing campaigning and efforts.
Glee Club To Leave
On Annual Tour Of
Churches And School
The Brevard College Glee Club
will leave Saturday, May 10th, on
their annual spring tour which
will take them to Methodist church
es and high schools through wes
tern piedmont North Carolina. The
tour will end on Thursday, May
15th.
The 37-voice group under the di
rection of Professor Nelson Adams
will present programs of both sa
cred and secular music. “Bilbba”
Vi/hisenant is the accompanist.
On Sunday, May 11th, the group
v/ill sing at First Methodist and
Myers Park Methodist churches in
Charlotte. They will sing at Lin-
colnton High School on Monday
afternoon, and at First Methodist
church Maiden, on Monday even
ing. On Tuesday, they will sing at
(Southwest High School in For
syth county and at Bessemer Meth
odist church, Greensboro, on
Tuesday evening.
The Wednesday schedule in
cludes programs at Rockwell High
School in Rowan county and Wine-
coff High School, Concord, and at
the Spindale Methodist Church
that evening. On Thursday after
noon, the Glee Club will sing at
Bryson City High School, and on
Thursday evening at the Franklin
Methodist church.
