may 1, 1959 the clarion PAGE THREE I...11.1 OUR GANG I With Judy McManus '0 Qiiiiiiim""’*"*"""" With my sincerest apologies for my last column, I shall try diligent ly to make this one a little more in teresting. Ever played conversation? Well do, ’eause it’s great fun. I never realized hovv stories become tales and vice versa until sixteen of Bre vard’s finest and I decided to try our hands at the game out on the lawn in front of the imfirmary last week. We started the story—“Once upon a time, there was a little girl who was aibout 9V2” tall and who weighed aibout 136 pounds.” Then the stretching process began. The girl and her boy friend were sitting in a wrecked oar in Pisgah Forest — Kent Dorsey continued,” ... a tall dark man with glasses walked up, opened the car door, and . - Tommy Laidlaw explained, .. it was Dean Bennett, who fear lessly told the young couple that they could NOT take 19% credit hours without his permission!” And so the story ended. Nothing could top that unless it was the tale Au- reha Morgan told about the three Martian men visiting Jones Hall, who were terribly confused by Pat Tatham’s vain plea for empty coke bottles! Wihatever it is, Lamar White’s got it, too. He’s suggesting that they turn the Lily Pond into a swimming pool. I think he feels that it would be profitable. Well, it strikes me that today is the first of May — and that means our May Day is tomorrow! So for today and tomorrow, I want to wish Queen Loretta and her court the ver>' best. Congratulations and may your reign be filled with all the fresh new beauty of spring. To the rest of the student body, we’ll be seeing you tomorrow afternoon at the May program and at the dance following in the evening. Memoes: To Tomlmy Laidlaw: That 30 second time limit you’ve set on your conversations will NEV ER work. I know! To Marvin Clark: But Marvin, there’s absolutely no demand for the rebel yell or the Tarzan ape call these days! To the RSY (Rid the South of Yankees group): The South may rise again, but without the North, what good’s it going to do us, huh? To Boibby Tickle, Jack Hill, Ru- Qy Lewis, and Webb Curry: Well, I’m afraid that spring fever’s got you, too. Maybe, to be on, the safe side, you’d better stay away froim all suspicious-looking little men in white coats. Asheville’s famed BiHtmore Es tate was invaded — by the Phi The- ta Kappa and Alpha Belta Gamma last Saturday. Prize comments in cluded thesie: “I’m sorry, but Mo ther said she wasn’t expecting this LTiUch company.” “Where did you say the cows sleep?” “I simiply can’t understand the presence of all these secrcet service men in MY house!” AND, “What a love ly yellow tulip that - - - was!” And nov/, with my eyes wide open and my ear to the keyhole, I leave you till next time when I’ll write my last column for this year. Bre vard took the lead in the top of the first inning and kept adding to it as the game progressed. The Tornadoes combined the tal ents of top hurler, Harry Skipper, and ace reliefer, Tdmmy Dickens, to hold the Tech men to a total of three softies. Skipper, pitching his second game in two nights, was a magician on the mound. He allow ed only two hits in his six inning stint, while striking out eight bat ters. Skipi>er had full control of his sharp, breaking curve, fast ball, and change-up and was never, in trouble. Tommy Dickens came on in the sixth and allowed one hit, t triple, in the eighth, while fanning four batters. The Tornadoes played their best ballgame of the season here, not c6mimitting. an error. They had been “edged” by Wingate the night 'before, mainly (because of poor fielding. Their record for tiie- sea son now stands at two wins against six defeats. Track Team Cops Six Points At Furman Meet The Brevard college track team picked up six points for a fourth and a fifth place in relay races, April 18, at the Piedmont Relays in Greenville, S. C.
