For New Members
The Brevard College Big Sister
organization has tapped 14 out-
standing rising sophomores for the i
year ’59-60. They are Betty Neale,!
of Charlotte, who is the president |
of the group; Chris Olsen, Nancy i
Poley, and Judith McManus, also
of Charlotte; Martha Adams and
Susan Hunt, of Gastonia; Martha i
Clark, of Concord; Virginia Dos-i
cher, of Charleston, S. C.; Betty ]
Sutherland, Linda Sluder, and
June Feemster, all of Asheville;
Betty Lou Hornaday, of Waynes-
ville; Betty Eure, of Morehead
City; and Patricia Pruitt, of Bre
vard.
A picnic was held for the new
members on May 18, and the instal
lation service was held at that
time. Preliminary plans were also
made for the coming year. The
group will return to campus sever
al days before the freshmen arrive
for further planning and study for
the year’s program.
McManus Chosen
Chief Marshal
Judy McManus, of Charlotte, will
serve as the chief marshal for the
commenceiment exercises begin
ning on May 30.
Other marshals are Dee Carden,
of Asheboro; Kay Fink, of Con-
cird; Celia Hooper, of Canton; Nan
cy Poley, of Charlotte; and Max
Walser, of Lexington.
The marshal appointments were
announced by Professor J. J. Stev
enson, Jr., college marshal and
chairman of the committee on Ac
ademic Honors and Awards.
Considered one of the highest
honors granted to a student at Bre
vard college, the office of marshal
Stephen Wetoto Brown of Ashe
ville was formally installed as the
new SGA president on Wednesday
morning, May 13. He will serve
during the school year 1959-1960.
Elected to serve with Steve
Vv^ere; vice-president, Thomas Dick
ens; secretary - treasurer, Aurelia
Morgan; and social chairman, Sara
Cox.
Editorial Heads

ing the election were: “Clarion”
editor, Judy McManus; Pertelote
editor. Marly Clark; “Clarion” bus
iness manager, Chuck Rimer; and
“Pertelote” business manager,
Lavaun Taylor.
Charles Garner, the outgoing
president, briefly reviewed the
current term’s activities following
Brown’s induction.
In his acceptance remarks, the
new oresident said, “With your
help and with God’s help we shall
strive to make next year a good
year.”
Steve, a graduate of Asheville’s
Lee Edwards High School, is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Brown.
A pre-ministerial student, he has
been active this year in Kappa
Chi and Christian Fellowship, and
he has also served on the Christian
Council.
Assembly Officers
Celia Hooper of Canton and
Francis Guffey of Oak Hill, West
Virginia, will preside over the
meetings of the Women’s and Men’s
Assemblies next year. Recently in
stalled during chapel-asseimWy in
a candlelight ceremony, Celia and
“Guffy” replaced Myra Dellinger
and Bobby Tickle.

Deliver Addresses;
Glee Club To Sing
In preparation for graduation,
approximately sixty Brevard col
lege sophomores will follow a rig
orous schedule beginning early
May 30 and ending following the
graduation exercises on May 31.
The culmination of the two days’
activities will toe the bafccalaureate
scrvice at 11:00 Sunday morning
in the Brevard Methodist church
and the commencement exercises
at 4:00 that afternoon in the col
lege auditorium.
Commencement Speakers
The Reverend Philip L. Shore
will deliver the Baccalaureate ser
mon. Pastor of the First Methodist
Church in Hendersonville, the Rev
erend Shore has been active in the
Methodist church for many years
and is a member of the Board of
Trustees of Brevard college.
The commencement speaker will
be Dr. George T. Harrell, Dean,
College of Medicine, University ol
Florida. Dr. Harrell has been a
leader in numerous medical asso
ciations, holding top offices in the
Southern Society for Chemical Re
search and the Medical Advisory
Panel. A graduate of Duke Uni
versity, Dr. Harrell has won sever
al awards for his exhibits before
the SMA and the AMA.
Alumni Ltmcheon
Among the other activities sched
uled is the annual Alumni Lunch
eon and business meeting in the
coUege cafeteria at 12:30 p. m.,
May 20. Memibers of the graduating
class will be the special guests and
will be officially welcomed into
the Alumni association at that
time.
Glee Club Concert
Following, at 8:00 p. m., the an
nual concert by the music depart
ment will be presented in the Sims
Center building auditorium. Fea
tured will be the 49 - voice Glee
club, under the direction of Mr.
Nelson F. Adams, and the Brevard
College Symphonette, conducted
by Mr. Ralph Reed.
Carillon Recital
At 3:30 Sunday afternoon, a Car
illon recital will be heard.
Bennets, Dean Plant
Entertain Students
Dean and Mrs. J. B. Bennett will
entertain students with a “Victory
Over Exam” celebration at their
home between the hours of three
and five o’clock on Friday after
noon.
Dean Rubie Plant was hostess to
members of the Student council
and other invited guests for the
evening meal on Thursday, May 21
in Jones Hall.

The eight-page “Clarion” ori
ginally scheduled for publica
tion had to be cancelled because
it could not be off the press un
til Saturday, May 30; thus, very
few students would have been
here to see it. It was impossible
to have an eight - page paper
printed any sooner, so the “Clar
ion” staff thought it best to set
tle for a regular 4-page edition
which could be published in time
for more people to obtain a copy.
