NOVEMBER 18. I960 THE CLARION PAGE THREE 1 TORNADO TALK | {tIilllllllllOlltll mu uMiiniiinmmmiimiuiuiiMiiiiiiiiiuiiMiiiiimiMiiiiiiiiiiQ The Western Oarolinas’ Junior College Oonifieirenice, of which Brevard CoEege is -a. memiber, looks like it will be veiry well bailanjeed. this year, with several teams having a nixmlbeir of out standing players retorning, according to Coach “Chick” MaTtin. In addition to Brevard, ithe W.C.J.C.C. is made of the following teams: Mars Hill, North Gr‘8ienville, Lees McRae, Asheville Bilt- more, Spartanlburg, Gardner Webb, and Wingate. Wingate won the ohampiionslhip laat year with North Green ville Qs runner-uip and Brevard finishing third. This year the same three teams have some of their better players I'ettuminig along with Lees McRaa and Gardner We^bb. The Tom'adoes will be ranked as one of the stroniger teams of th3 conference, but will have to continue to make imiprovement in order to be a can- tender for the co‘nference championship. Wingate lost several of their outstanding players but have several lEKceHewt freshmen on their team whiicih will still maike i them a strong contender again this year. ^ North Greenville, the second-place team, has an outstanding player returning in Randy Duncan along witJh several outstand ing freshmsin thiat were recruited during the sunjmier. Brevard was able to defeat Gardner Webb twice I'ast year by slim m'argins of one point a'nd five points. Gardner W^ebb lost only one man from their starting team and wdlH be very tough feigaiin this year. . The Torna^'oes split two games with Deisis McRae during the regular season and won by one point over them in the comsolaltiom bracket of the tournament for third plada Lees McRae did not ! los'e a single man from its team and therefore will have a very good team again this yoar. Spartanburg, Asheville Biltmore, and Mars Hill did not have very outstanding records last year, but these teams can be dfe- pen'ded upon to improve as the season progrtssses. This should be an exciting year for the students; the balanced fciague this year in baske'tbaill should provide tlhe student body with the opportunity to see some close amid exciting baHgames. Coach Martin expressed the hope that tba team’s record will be good, iparticularly on the home court where the Taraadoes suffer ed only o>n3i loss last year. He added that the team will have to improve over its present s-tatus in lorder to be able to hold its own in the conference. The I tealm is rounding into shape rather slowly physically, leaving had j several minor injuries.
