Tourney Team Beats NG In Finals For Championship Behind the brilliant shooting of Tom Barbee, the Tornadoes over-powered the North Green ville Mounties by a 97-74 score in the final game of the WCJCC tourney, Saturday in Greer, South Carolina. Brevard’s de fense and rebounding were su perb as the team completely dominated the backboards. Charlie Jacobs started the Tor nadoes rolling as he dumped in the first two points of the ball game. Then North Greenville roared back to take a 11-7 lead. Brevard, not to be “out-done,” grabbed the lead back and staved off the Mountie attack. During the first half Coggins and Bar bee hauled in the rebounds vi'hich proved to be a chief fac tor in the game. However, the, fans gasped as they saw Barbee pump in basket after basket; it seemed as though the North Bun combe High product never miss ed. The Tornadoes held an ele-' ven point lead at the halftime, j As the second half progressed, | the Mounties fought back to ] come within three points of ty ing the score, as Tankersley and Duncan led the way. The Tor- radoes then left the Mounties behind as they put on a fourth quarter exhibition of sharpshoot- ing and backboard domination. Brevard Tornadoes’ Tom Bar bee was awarded the Most Valu able Player trophy and was nam ed to the Western Carolina Jun ior College all-Tournament team along with Glover Cogins at the game in Greer, South Carolina, Saturday night. The Tornadoes, winners of the regular season crown, defeated North Greenville, 97-74, to win the tournament. Barbee led the team to the tourney crown by dumping in 43 points, breaking his own school record of 37 set in the Junior Classic Tournament earlier in the season. Tom, who was conference high scorer, received the trophy for the Most Valuable Player of the tourna ment. He, along with Glover Coggins, also made the All-Tourney team. Coach Martin is holding the trophy the team received for winning the tournament. Religion Emphasis Week Services Will Feature R. H. Nicholson, Waynesville Minister, As Speaker Religious Emphasis Week, March 5-9, will present many opportunities to ponder the truths of the Christian faith and many opportunities to renew al legiance. On Tuesday, March 7, Mr. R. H. Nicholson, speaker at various services during Religious Em phasis Week will meet informal ly with girls in Annabel Jones Hall lobby. Wednesday, March 8, Mr. Nich olson will meet with the boys in the lobby of Taylor Hall for a discussion period. Also, Mr. Nicholson will he available for personal counseling each afternoon from 2:30-4:30 in Dunham 207, Mr. Roy’s office. Former North State Confer ence and Little Four Stars will dominate the Western North Carolina all-star team which faces Rosey’s Major Leaguers in the Enka High Gymnasium March 18. The WNC star quint is coach- j ed by George Lancaster and features Little All-American Don Rogers and Daddy Neal, stars for the Enka Rayonites last year. On the WNC team in addition to Rogers, who played for WCC, and Neal, a Wofford product, are Harris and Floyd Pryor, ed to attend. Students are en couraged to welcome these guests to our campus. Western Carolina; Herb Ed monds, East Tennessee; Jack Teague, WCC; Lee Farmer, foot ball and baseball star at Lenoir Rhyne; Tom Barbee of Brevard, most outstanding player in the recently complet'ed Western Carolina Junior College tourna ment which was won by Bre vard; John Eller, who also starr ed for Brevard; and Bill Bar bee, Wofford product. The Major Leaguers are built around former All-American Lenny Rosenbluth. Included on the squad are five other mem bers of the UNC team which won the national crown. They are Joe Quigg, Ray Stanley, Tony Radovick, Danny Lotz, and A1 Long. Other on the club are Vv'hitey Bell of State and Bobby Joe Harris of Duke. BC Will Meet Winners Of Region HE Due to the winning of the Western CaroUnas Junior Col lege Conference tournament championship, the Brevard Col lege Tornadoes are now eligible to play in the 1961 National Jun ior College Athletic Associatlcrn Basketball Tournament to be held in Hutchinson, Kansas, March 14-18. There will be sixteen teams taking part in the tourney whicli follows a double-elimination for mat with first-round losers eligv- ble to move back up as far ss fifth place in the final ranking. The Tornadoes have a prac tice scheduled in Hutchinson from 3 to 4 p.m. March 13. The time of leaving Brevard will de pend on the type of transporta tion that is used. These passes will be honor ed for each player and his date at any time. They will also be allowed twenty-five cents at the concession stand.
