rnrnrnimmm ■ may 26, 1961 THE CLARION PAGE SEVEN Final Games See Two Won, Three Lost The North Greenville Mounties handed the Tornadoes their eighth loss of the season Friday, May 5, by the score of 10-1. The Tornadoes were again hampered by errors and misjudgements on decisive plays. The Brevard nine failed to score in the top half of the first inning as the Mountie hur- ler retired Gossett and Holland with the strike out route and Danny Bost on a grounder. Jack Lee, Brevard Mounds-i man, worked smothly retiring Mountie batters through the first two innings. However, Lee ran into difficulties in the third as he worked himself into a bases-loaded situation due to faulty fielding. Two runs had been scored before the last N. Greenville batter was retired to end the third inning. In the third, Gene Holland' doubled to right-center, and came home when the Mountie shortstop threw wildly to first on Jack Lee’s grounder. This was Brevard’s only score. Meanwhile, North Greenville continued to “dent the rubber” I capitalizing on Brevard errors] scoring four runs in the sixth inning, and four more in the eighth. Tom Barbee had two hits for two times at bat, while Gene Gos sett, Holland, and Bost had one hit each. The Tornadoes unleashed a savage plate attack here, Wed nesday, May 10, to thrash Ashe- ville-Biltmore in a double head er, 4-0, 3-L Jack Lee spaced three hits to gain his fourth victory against three losses this season. The A- B team couldn’t get to Lee in time to threaten, but the Torna does collected seven hits to take an early lead. In the second inning, Doug Scott was safe on a fielder’s ciioice and Jim Wilson gain ed life on an error to place runners on first and third. Jack Lee then delivered the big blow of the frame as he blasted a long double to right field to send Scott and Wilson across the plate. That was all Lee needed to assure the victory. Again, in the fourth, Wilson led off with a walk and scored on an error to make the score 3-0. In the bottom of the sixth inning. Gene Holland doubled and scored on Jim Wilson’s base hit. C. c Basketball Is Tops For BC This Season The Brevard College Torna does basketball team rolled through the ’60-61 season win ning eighteen games while losing four. This earned the team first place in the conference and the conference championship played at Greer, South Carolina. Brev ard then went to Hutchinson, Kansas, and played in the champ ionship action there. The team lost out in the first round, but they represented the college in fine manner. Tom Barbee and Glover Cog gins gathered laurels for Bre vard College by exhibiting their talent. Both players made the All-Conference Team and the All- Tourney Team, and Barbee was selected to the honorable men tion All-Tournament Team in the National Junior College Tourney and to the third string All-Amer ican Team. This was the sec ond year Barbee has received this national honor. A school record was broken this year — Tom Barbee broke his own single game scoring with 43 points in the tournament at Greer, South Carolina. Big John Eller hauled in the most rebounds for the season as he compiled an 11.8 average. Coach Martin will lose his five starters via graduation this year, but he will have an exper ienced team returning next year with a few main standouts among the team members. This was the big year for basket ball at Brevard College. The Torna does, led by Coach “Chick” Martin, were the conference and tournament champions. Mem ories of the basketball team will be high in every student’s recollect ions of the 1960-61 term. two singles in three official trips to the plate. In the second game of the doubleheader, Mack Haywood chalked up his first mound vic tory of the season as he scattered six hits to down A-B, 3-1. This marked Brevard’s fifth confer ence victory. . Asheville-Biltmore jumped in to an early lead in the frame as Elingburg singled and romped home on Baldwm s I triple. , However, Brevard scored three runs in the third inning. Gene Gossett led off with a single, and Mauney and Bost fol lowed with successive singles, with Gossett scoring. Mauney scored on Bost’s single. Later in the frame, Monty Matthews scor ed on Mack Haywood’s sacrifice. Both teams failed to score in the late innings as the game was defensively battled. Brevard, marred by errors and pitching, went down to its ninth defeat of the season. This game ends the season for the Tornadoes. In the second inning, Scott singled and rode home on Jim Wilson’s single to put the Tor nadoes into a 1-0 lead. However, Mars Hill scored three unearn ed runs in their half of the third to advance into the lead. Brevard fought back in the thud, scoring three more runs. Gene Gossett started off the frame with a single. Mick Mau ney singled and Danny Bost fol lowed with a base hit to drive Gossett across the plate. Jim Wilson singled to load the sacks and two runs came home on Monty Matthews’ shot to left field. Mars Hill hurler settled down to retire the next t\yo bat ters to end the rally. Brevard led, 5-3. However, Mars Hill’s “bomb- —^Turn To Page Elt^t Baseball Season Ends With 4-8 Conference Mark The Brevard College Tornado baseball team finished this sea son with a 4-8 Conference record and a 5-9 overall mark. If the Tornadoes could have bunched base hits with the good pitching at times or vice versa, then the team might have had a better season. Mack Haywood ap peared in one game on the mound and came out the victor. Monty Matthews, switching from the mound to first base in the latter part of the season, had an 0-1 as a pitcher. Bob Maske, hampered by sore elbow, pos sessed an 0-4 mark. Maske did hurl some fine baseballs but was often backed by faulty fielding.
