PAGE FOUR THE CLARION APRIL 26, 1963 WNC Scholastic Relays Slated For Todi^ 500 Athletes Compete For Honor Awards At least 20 schools and more than 500 boys will participate in the 12th annual Western Caro lina Scholastic Relays at the Brevard quarter - mile oval to day. The meet, annual spring clas sic for high school sports, is being jointly sponsored for the second year by Brevard High School, Brevard Jtmior Cham ber of Commerce, Asheville Jay- cees, and Brevard CoUege. Prior to 1962 it was held in Asheville, but last year it was tentatively moved to Brevard until a suitable grasstex track could be constructed at Ashe ville. While being held at Ashe ville the meet was for boys and girls, but at Brevard it is lim- iteid to boys. Last year’s champions, Hend'ersonville High, will not participate in this year’s meet. Ooach Rob Broiwn late last year committed the Bearcats to a Southern meet in Knoxville be fore knowing -that the date con flicted with the relays here. Coach Martin, atUetic direc tor of Brevard Coilege, is serv ing as director of the Western Carolina meet -and is accepting entries from schools. Entries al so are being handled by the Bre vard Jaycees. Invitations mailed by the AsheviUe Jaycees went to almost 90 schools from throughout Western North Caro lina. The meet itself will be gov erned toy state high school reg ulations. Only three individuals from each school and only one relay team per school may en ter an event. Points will be awarded for five places both in relays and individual events. The relay scoring is 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, and individual 5 through 1. Medals are to be awarded for each first place and ribbons will be given for the other places. Trophies will be given for the first five places in team standings and an additional trophy wUl go the the most outstanding performer. Lee Edwards High, Brevard, and Enka all have strong teams and -are the favorites for the meet. The events offered include Duke Freshmen Rip Tornadoes Duke freshmen took 11 first places out of 15 events to defeat the Brevard thinclads, lOOVz to SOVz, in a non-conference track meet at Brevard College, April 18. Duke proved to be too strong for the Brevard team as they easily pulled away with a great team effort. The field events include the pole vault, shot put, discus, broad jump, and high jump. The scratch meeting will be held at 11:30 and the meet will start at 12:30. now Itb Pepsi for those who think young T -USm On April 4, 1963, Roger Cum bie, an outstanding baseball player for the Tornadoes last season, broke his leg in a game at Anderson, South Carolina, dis abling him for the remainder of the baseball season. Cumbie played third base Mid was a great loss to the team. The accident occurred in the seventh inning with Brevard leading 7-2. Cumbie came up for his fifth time at bat, the first man to face a relief pitcher. Cumbie was hit in the side by a wild baU thrown by the pitcher, and took a free trip to first base. Charles Cort, already on base, moved down to second. Joe Forte then hit a grounder to third base and Cumbie, trying to prevent a double play, slid into second. Phone 3-42^ In the final game of Intramur al basketball in which three starters from each team were absent, the third floor Green Blivits captured the Intramuur- al Championship over the first floor Taylor Gladiators 5344. The high scorer for the night was Jerry Jenkins of first Tay lor with 24 points. Starnes had 10 points for the Gladiators. Don Thomas was high man for the Blivits with 18 points, follow ed by McMahan and Dickinson with 12 each. Having won the Intramural Championship, each full - time player on the Blivit team will receive a small trophy for his efforts. Bill Burgin, who coach ed the Blivits this season, will also receive a trophy and recog nition for the time and work which he devoted to the team. Cumbie’s leg was found to be broken in two places — the ankle bone and the tibia, just below the knee. He was given an open - reduction operation at the Greenville General hospital where he remained for seven days. Roger Cumbie is not only a fine infielder for Brevard, he is a good hitter at the plate and showed the utmost in sports manship. Brevard placed second with 45% points and Wingate was last with 32 points. Holifield, from Furman, was high scorer for the meet with 13 points. He took first places in the 880 yard dash and the mile run.
