Comes Ashore
Rising sophomore Tom Wer-
ling will lead the student body
next year as Pres’ident of the
Student Government Association.
He will be supported by David
Cort who is Vice-President.
Tom is from Hasbrouck
Heights, New Jersey, where he
was an outstanding athlete, play
ing varsity football, baseball,
and basketball. Graduating from
high school in 1959, Tom join
ed the Navy and after serving
three years, he came to Brevard.
He has shown fine qualities of
leadership here as Vice - Presi
dent of the freshman class and
a member of the Men’s House
Council. Tom plans to major
in accounting.
David Cort attended A. C.
Reynolds High School where he
was an honor graduate, a mem
ber of the Beta Club, and cap
tain of the basketball team. He
received the Most Outstanding
Senior award given by the Naval
Academy. This year David is
President of the freshman class,
a member of Alpha Beta Gam
ma, Phi Theta Kappa, and the
basketball team. His major is
math.

Clubs Announce Officers; Make Plans For 1963
The 1963 - 64 officers of the
Women’s House Council have
been elected by the women mem
bers of the student body. They
are as follows: President, Pris
cilla Dalway from Phoenixville,
Pennsylvania; Vice - President,
Jean Clark of Asheville; and
Secretary - Treasurer, Margaret
Harris from Black Mountain.
These girls were elected by sec
ret ballot.
The Women’s House Council,
composed of hall proctors se
lected by the officers, is respon
sible for disciplinary restraints
of women students. The newly
elected proctors are notified
each year before the opening of
the semester.
Officers and members of
both the Men’s and Women’s
House Councils attend the stu
dent workshop with other of
ficers of student affairs, prior
to each school year. In this way
they can better prepare for the
months ahead and discuss pos
sible solutions to problems
which may arise. Only students
who display good character and
high academic and social apti
tude are selected.

Big Sisters Tap 15
At a special assembly held on
Tuesday, May 7, the Big Sister
Organization tapped 15 girls to
serve in the capacity of counse
lors to incoming freshmen girls
next year. Those tapped were
Jane Martin, Authurine Spry,
Priscilla Dalway, Sue Keams,
Jane Hoke, Margaret Harris,
Cheryl Greene, Sue Rising, Dor
is Lance, Linda Edwards, Tom
mie Bowman, Catherine Atwell,
Dona Vaughn, Sara Barber, and
Doris Simpson .
The annual Big Sister supper
was held in the Faculty Dining
Room on May 9 for all the old
and new members of the organ
ization.
Athurine Spry, a rising sopho
more from Kannapolis, was in
ducted as president for next
year. She is a member of the
Women’s House Council and
has served consistently as a
hall proctor.
Membership in this organiza
tion is determined by scholastic
accomplishments (a 1.5 acade
mic requirement), leadership,
and congeniality. The outgoing
members nominate and elect
the new Big Sisters with ap
proval by the faculty.
Davidson To Lead Business Club
Members of the Business Club
met on Tuesday, April 30, in
Dunham Hall. A slate of offi
cers was presented by the nom
inating committee, and the mo
tion was made and carried that
these people be accepted by ac
clamation. They are as follows;
President, Margaret Davidson;
Vice - President, Jane Hoke;
Secretary, Martha Kimzey; Re
porter, Ann Hamilton. The treas
urer will be selected from next
year’s freshman class.

Hit The Market

Confetti H, the publication of
the English 16 (Creative Writ
ing) course, wiU be distributed
to students, faculty, administra
tion and staff of the college com
munity on Monday, May 13.
Members of the class will com
plete the folding, assembling,
stapling and glueing procedures
by Saturday. The book has been
printed on the college Multilith
machine by Mr. Ray Fisher.
Confetti was first published
in 1962. The initial book con
tained compositions of prose and
poetry by eleven students who
were enrolled for their first cre
ative writing course. The 1963
publication offers writing by a
few persons who are repeating
the course for a second hour
credit.
The class has sought to de
velop skills in poetic technique
and prose style. Although sev
eral poems have been put in
rhyme and meter, the formal
rules of composition have been
less important than inherent
rhythms and imagery. Prose

Slated May 18
TRIAL BY JURY, a short one-
act opera in the Gilbert and Sul
livan comic tradition, will be
given jointly by the Brevard
College Music Department and
the Drama Department. The
opera will be presented Satur
day, May 18, beginning at 8:00
p.m. in the Campus Center
Building Auditorium.
The plot of the opera goes
like this: Edwin, tiring of his
sweetheart, Angelina, falls in
love with another; Angelina ac
cordingly hails him into court
for breach of promise. Though
both Jury and Judge indicate

lina, will perform in an organ
recital at the Brevard Metho
dist Church on Sunday, May 12,
at 4:00 p. m.
Miss Whisenant was a grad
uate of Brevard College and
Greensboro College with a B. M.
in Church Music. She is a mem

Awards Night
The annual Brevard Little
Theater Awards Banquet will be
held Friday, May 17, in the
American Legion Building, ac
cording to Mrs. Betty Evering-
ham, social chairman.
The entire BLT membership
and any other persons interested
in Little Theater are cordiaHy
invited to attend.
The main event of the evening
will be the awarding of sixteen
handsome plaques for outstand
ing performances and service
