TORNADO SPORTS by Wes Howe The prospects for the coming 1rack season at Brevard look good. Coach Martin has set up three dual meets, three trian gular meets, the News-Piedmont aelays and the WCJC confer ence meet for the Tornadoes. Six sophomores and eleven freshmen compose the team. In 100, 220, and 440 Coach Martin has Carroll Maxwell, the holder of three North Carolina State records, Kenny Baughn running, ; Bob Tuck, Brevard’s best man in the event last year, is back to run the 880. In the mile and two-mile, the conference cross-country cham pion, John Hubner, and the Tornadoes’ best man in the events last year, Joe Brown, will be the prospects. BREVARD PLACES THIRD IN TOURNAMENT AT FOREST CITY Gilbert will also be running in the distance races. Mike Thompson, South Caro lina high school hurdle champ, will be running the hurdles along with Jim Allen. In the field events, Sopho more Bob Fen-y and Freshman Dwight Self will be throwing the shot put. Both men should be throwing over 40 feet this spring. Bob Ferry will also be throw ing the discus. Last spring he was conference champion in that event. Freshman Bob John son will also be throwing the discus. In the Javelin there are two returnees from last year—Ferry and Wes Howe. Three Fresh men, Bill Farkas, Bob Johnson, and Jim Brown will also throw the spear. In the broad jump Kenny Baughn will be doing the jump ing. Kenny jumped nearly twenty-one feet last year for Brevard High School. Mike Gillespie and Jim Allen will be doing the pole vaulting. Mike was Brevard’s best vaulter last year, and Jim has jumped over 12 feet. Mr. Ray Burson will be coach ing the runners. Coach Martin will handle the field events, and Ed Pryor will act as team man ager. The team has strength in most of the events but needs more men in the high jump, broad jimip, and the hurdles. Anyone who would like to try any of these events should come out as soon as i>ossible. No ex perience is needed. The first meet is March 23 against Win gate. Brevard College took third place in WCJCC Tournament held in Forest City on February 25, 26, and 27. Gardner Webb was the cham pion and Lees McRae took sec ond place. Brevard won its first game over North Greenville 82 to 70. The Tornadoes led through out the game. They had a 121 point lead after 15 minutes of' play. At half time they led 39 to 27. After five minutes of the s^- ond half, Brevard had built up a 21 point lead. The Mounties cut the lead to 10 points, but Brevard held on to win by 12 points. Brevard had four men in double figures for the first game. Bob Pickens was high with 22 and Sherman Fearing had 21. The other two in dou ble figures were Larry Burch with 18 and Jim Hammond with 11 points. Brevard lost its chances to go to the finals by losing to Lees McRae, 73 to 71. Early in the first period Bre vard built up a nine point lead. By half time Lees McRae had cut the lead to one. The half- time score was 34 to 33. Late in the last half the Bob cats had a 6 point lead. Bre- vard put on a full court press With 30 seconds to go the Tor nadoes tied the score. | Lees McRae scored on a lay! up to give them the game. Bre-| vard was unable to score when' they got the ball with two sec onds to go. Larry Burch was the game’s high scorer with 24 points. Joe Nesbitt had 17 tallies. The Tornadoes won the con solation game Saturday night by defeating Spartanburg 79 to 72. At half-time Brevard had a 45 to 39 lead over the Pioneers. The Tornadoes outscored Spartanburg 34 to 33 in the last half to take a seven point win. Larry Burch was the game’s high scorer with 26 points. Bob Pickens and Joe Nesbitt each scored 20 points. Larry Burch was Brevard’s high scorer for the tournament with 68 points. Bob Pickens had 52, Sherman Fearing had 41 and Joe Nesbitt scored 40. Bre vard’s other scorers were Dave Morrow with 9, Duane Morgan with 5, Jim Hanunond with 13 and Bruce Smith with 3 points. 11111 III! They gained first place on their 11-3 record in individual games. Green Basement came in second and Taylor Basement and 1 were in third. On the third night of play Tay lor Basement and I beat Green 1 and Day; Taylor III defeated Green III; and Taylor II beat Green II. All of the matches were won 2 games to none. In the fourth round of play Green Basement beat Green III 2 games to none. Taylor III de feat Green II in two straight games. Taylor II won its match over Green II and Day 2 games to one. Green Basement downed Green II 2 games to one on the fifth night of play. Taylor III beat Green I and Day in two straight games. Taylor Base ment and 1 won by forfeit over Green III. On the final night of play Tay lor II beat Green III two games to none. Basement Green beat Green 1 and Day, and Taylor Basement and 1 defeated Green II. Both matches were won 2 games to one. Bob Stamey, Tony Russell. Larry Runion, John Colley, Den nis Houston and Dave Ellerbe were named to the All-Star Vol leyball team. Tornadoes Lose To Clemson In Soccer The Brevard Soccer Club lost a close game to the Clemson Tigers March 6. The score of the match was 3 to 1. Neither team was able to score in the first half. The Tornadoes broke the scoring ice in the third quarter when Mr. Tauscher scored from the left side. In the fourth quarter, Clem son managed to score three goals in the goal that was sev eral feet too big in both height and width. Dave Ellerbe played an ex cellent game in the second and fourth quarters. With a very strong wind coming at him, Dave stopped many of the Tig er’s efforts at the goal.
