celling both academically and
Sletically while at Brevard,
L Pickens is one of the most
^pular students on campus.
“Pickens,” who came to Bre
vard on academic and athletic
scholarships, has maintained a
superior scholastic average.
Each semester he has been nam
ed to the Honor Roll and has
served as a marshal this year.
Athletically, Bob has contri
buted his talents to the basket
ball and baseball teams at Bre
vard College. As co-captain of
the Tornado basketball team
this year, Bob was the second
highest scorer for the season,
earning a total of 303 points.
Fob entertained the fans with
his antics and his skill in han
dling the ball during regular
season play. His sportsmanship
is an equally fine credit to the
college. Certainly he is deserv
ing of the respect and admira
tion of his friends and the boys
who played ball with him.
As soon as the post-season
basketball games were complet
ed, Bob’s afternoon hours were
filled once again with practice
-baseball practice. Last year
Bob had the best pitcher’s rec
ord for the season, despite the
fact that he had never played
on a team before.
The students have honored
Bob by electing him to the of
fice of Vice-president of the Stu
dent Government Association.
In this capacity Bob has repre
sented the students at SGA
meetings, and was in charge of
the candy sale, which that or
ganization sponsored over the
Christmas holidays. Last year
the Freshman class selected Bob
as “Mr. Freshman.”
Any one at Brevard who
knows “Pickens” also knoiws
Dave Morrow. It is impossible
on a campus the size of Bre
vard for a person to know one
and not the other. These boys,

LETTER TO THE EDFTOR
BOB PICKENS—Student of the week
pus at the same time, “look af
ter” the inhabitants of Cantrell
house. Together Dave and Bob
live, learn, study, play . . . En
ough said.
Things that mean a lot to Bob
are basketball games. Period!!
Well, he does like “I Spy,” “Man
From UNCLE,” and “Voyage to
■he Bottom of the Sea” — “The
Fugitive,” he says, is too impos
sible.
There are other characteris
tics which must be added before
one can fully know Bob. For
instance, he is perpetually
broke, and is never prepared for
those pops that Dean Roberts
seems to give periodically. He
always plays a game of pool
before a basketball game, and
he always combs his hair first
thing when he gets up in the
morning. The latter is perform
ed so faithfully, according to
this writer’s source, that it
m.ight be disastrous for the en
tire community if he failed to
do so.
Dancing, a pretty blond, and
the beautiful Pisgah National
Forest all appeal very much to
the West Virginian—if there is
not a basketball game to be or
viewed.
Robert Lee Pickens. Yes, he’s
the boy from West Virginia.
Sure—you know him. He’s the
fellow with the most innocent
look on his face . . . with the
friendly greeting ... or the
missing contact lens . . . He’s
the fellow with 800 pounds of
candy sitting on his front porchi-
You can’t miss hun. But we’re
all going to, come May 15.
Bob hopes to attend Davidson
College next year.

My dear Paul,
Your letter is to be commended for its insight
into the problems facing our campus and for its obvi
ous sincerity. It did miss the point, but this should
not be taken as a personal insult. It is easy to become
tangled in trivialities.
As long as the United States government is a
government of law^s in preference to one of men and
as long as colleges pattern their government after
this model, there can be no remedy for those M^ho
take their complaints outside of the formal and in
formal constitutional set-up. Your gripes are empty
because of a lack of familiarity about the govern
ment under which you are living. You are sowing
your seeds on the fallow ground rather than on the
mellow ground. You could talk to Earl Warren and
Lyndon Johnson and get the same scanty results.
Complaints about the campus should be brought
up before your house council (introduced by appear
ing yourself or by petition). From there they are
taken to the SGA through your representative or
again by you. Then they go to Dean Roberts and
depending upon the nature of the suggestion he takes
it before the Discipline Committee or the Student
Affairs Committee. The final resting place for your
suggestions is the Administrative Council from which
the decision on your suggestion can be filtered back
down the hierarchy to you. This chain of command
process was adopted by business and government
among other reasons because it was a more efficient
way of communication than other processes. If this
process is slow and if some suggestions are killed on
their way throufrh this process, this is recognized by
those who live under this process as being the wise
and just M^ay to measure the worth of suggestions
and their relative value to the majority of those gov
erned by this system. To upset this process is to en
danger those persons who are not involved in the
extra-legal minority. Protocol runs so strong in some
businesses and government that men are dismissed
from their jobs for “going over the head” of an offi
cer in the chain of command. It is just assumed that
that person is not cooperating for the “good of the
many.” You should always have the riprht to “go to
the top” but in doine- so yon are frustrating your own
aims. Allow me to illucidate:
1. The President has commissioned Dean Roberts,
me, the SGA, the Student Affairs Committee and its
various branches, and the Discipline Committee to
handle students affairs. To circumvent this process
is to slow it down and cause great misunderstandings.
In order to preserve the division of labor that now
exists and the principles of student government at all,
your proposals will have to be brought back “from
the top” through all these levels of communication.
In the meantime you have lost valuable time, and
have not informed “the top” of any more than it
would have found out through regular channels. If
you did not know about the chain of command then
that is partly my fault, but I thought it was obvious.
2. By using extra-legal methods to obtain what
you want, you are endangering the form of govern
ment which is presently giving you the right to speak
your peace. By not making use of a referendum,
recall, or even initiative there is no way to ascertain
if your ideas are shared by the majoritv of the stu
dents on this campus. I have no sympathy with you
if you favor the dictatorship of an extra-legal minor
ity when constitutional means for venting your feel
ings exis-t. My knowledge of such dictatorships makes
you a direct threat to my freedom. The extra-legal
