geptcniber 8, 1967 the clarion Top Coaches, Qualified Athletes, Student Backing Spell Success With the new school year in infancy, the athletic department of Brevard College is filing away the rough edges as each team prepares for a new sea son Each will try to improve its record from last ear, with the help of sophomore experience and new freshman talent. And for some, such as baseball, the season is months away, but workouts are still j-jie order of the day. Brevard College is blessed with a fine coaching staff and excellent athletic talent. Under the coach es’leadership, the players work hard and strive to give Brevard College a winning name in each and every performance. The responsibility of the student body of Bre- vard College is to give “moral and oral” support to the teams throughout the campaign of each. As you well know, without the great number of school sup porters and a large amount of school spirit, athletics are reduced to mere statistics. If one works hard and wins, his feeling of accomplishment is greatly lessened if there are not others there to express their pride in a job-well-done. i PAGE THKEE Outlook For Cross Country Is Bright What exactly is the outlook for the ’67 Cross Country sea son? Coach Talley feels this way, “as a whole the team looks better balanced and stronger than last year’s.” This year’s strength lies in five returning lettermen: Charlie Allen, Capt. Dave Fussell. Marice Green, Capt. Ned Jones, and Bobby Julian. Also out for the first time are sophomores Roger Jones and Norman Smith. Dave Fussell, team captain, is run ning much betiter than last year and we expect great things from him. “The team only has five fresh men out, but they are the fin est group Brevard has seen in the past five years. Bob Gray, Mike Poole, Mike Scurto, and Jimmy Thames would be a fine addition to any senior college varsity team. Expectations of these boys are set high for this and next year’s seasons. “People don’t realize what ac tually goes on at a typical work out for these boys. They have only been working out for about a week and are not in as good shape as desired ,but time should correct this condition. The team needs a few more long Dard runs (15 to 50 miles) with 3 lot of hard work. “It is a little early to say too ®uch about the attitude, but Me team is working hard to fry to improve their 8-1 season of last year. Their main goal “IS year Ls to make the Na tional Championships. It must e kept in mind though that ^se decicated boys are run- their school and the Mded support of each and ev- student will help improve “wr chances of winning.” Nancy Brockwell Wins Miss Brevard' Music Dept.
