Student Union, it is not feasible

I'he SNEA (Students Nation
al Education Association) of
Brevard College has adopted a
tutoring program as its princi
pal project for the next two
semesters. In connection with
this project, a meeting of mem
bers and non-members, who
were interested, was conduct
ed October 2, by Mr. Tawney,
advisor for the group.
Plans were made by the
group to offer tutoring on the
elementary level at Brevard’s
two elementary schools, Straus
and Brevard Elementary.
The areas of emphasis will
be math, reading, and spelling
with the addition of music, art,
and physical educati>on, cur
rently becoming introduced in
to the elementary level.
Each tutor must spend two
hours per week with his stud
ent. The ratio, of course, will
be one-to-one with the excep
tion of the music, art, and phy
sical education areas.
Any student, freshman or
sophomore, interested in the
program should contact Mr.
i Tawney immediately.
The tutoring program itself
i.s in its third year with the
SNEA. For the past two years,
emphasis had been placed on
the junior high level. However,
the Supervisor of Instruction
for Transylvania County, Mrs.
Hilda Olson, feels that drop
ping back to the elementary
level will prove more bene
ficial. The tutors will be work
ing indirectly with Mrs. Olson.
“It is just a tremendous op
portunity,” Mr. Tawney explain
ed. “I strongly emphasise the
