He will be guest speaker and recitalist during Brevard Col lege’s Contemporary Music Festival, beginning Oct. 8. All musical ensembles will participate in the week’s ac tivities including the choir. Glee Club, Brass Ensemble, and the Methodist Church Cancel Choir. Announcements of the week’s activities are posted on the bulletin board. SNEA To Begin Tutor Program On September 23, Phi Theta Kappa held a sidewalk, closihg- oiit sale in front of the class room building. Last year the Book Nook sold various copies of paperback looks, Monarch notes, study snides, and maps. Because of the financial difficulties and tie change of location of the Student Union, it is not feasible to continue the project this year. New paperback books were sold for half price and a wide '’Jriety of Second-hand books sold for five and ten cents each, All members of Phi Theta ^*PPa considered the sale of wcess because the Book Nook Wicit was covered. Zen Den SATURDAY 8:00-12:00 Student Center I'he SNEA (Students Nation al Education Association) of Brevard College has adopted a tutoring program as its princi pal project for the next two semesters. In connection with this project, a meeting of mem bers and non-members, who were interested, was conduct ed October 2, by Mr. Tawney, advisor for the group. Plans were made by the group to offer tutoring on the elementary level at Brevard’s two elementary schools, Straus and Brevard Elementary. The areas of emphasis will be math, reading, and spelling with the addition of music, art, and physical educati>on, cur rently becoming introduced in to the elementary level. Each tutor must spend two hours per week with his stud ent. The ratio, of course, will be one-to-one with the excep tion of the music, art, and phy sical education areas. Any student, freshman or sophomore, interested in the program should contact Mr. i Tawney immediately. The tutoring program itself i.s in its third year with the SNEA. For the past two years, emphasis had been placed on the junior high level. However, the Supervisor of Instruction for Transylvania County, Mrs. Hilda Olson, feels that drop ping back to the elementary level will prove more bene ficial. Martin Receives Appointment Mr. Leighton Martin, basket ball coach and head of the Physical Education Depart ment, recently attended a meet ing of the Executive Commit tee for Physical Education, a part of the Joint Committee on College Transfer of Noth Cao- lina Colleges. Coach Martin is one of nine members on the committee headed by Dr. Bar row, head of the Physical Edu cation Department at Wake For est. The group met at Coleman Gymnasium at the University of North Carolina, in Greens boro, September 19 and 26. The committee’s functions involves the transfer of physical education and health to the senior college level. It attempts to bring the two with in a level of acceptance by all senior colleges for transfer credit. A recommendation made at the committee meeting stated that physical education and health continue to be required of freshman andi sophomore college students. The commit tee concerns itself with both junior and senior colleges throughout the state.
